Teachers: Education Association Membership
« on: August 07, 2014, 08:24:03 PM »
Mr FP is a public school teacher starting a new job. He has never had an education membership before, but here more people seem to have it. It costs a whopping $65 a month! The biggest deal is protection if you get sued.

Is it Mustachian to have such a membership? Are there cheaper alternatives we should consider?

When I taught public ed, I paid for the association and found it definitely worth it.  The legal services cover everything including at that time wills and other basic services.

More seriously, had two coworkers where allegations came up, one paid dues and everything was covered.  The other didn't and he had to take out loans to pay for legal services.  They were both completely cleared, but one owed nothing since he was paying dues whereas the other was still paying his loan years later.

I never had anything serious, but used a few services offered.  I felt being in the association was like having insurance, it's great to have when you need it.

Most offer tons of services outside of legal.  You'll need your FP to ask for literature on all they offer.

Good luck!

I joined the association when I first became a teacher because it was the right thing to do.  They are the sole bargaining unit for us, and they had negotiated a pretty good contract.  I felt it was my duty to say thanks by joining.  Otherwise, I would kind of be a freeloader.  Now, six years later, I am more involved and have become an officer of the association.  I strongly believe in labor unions in general, and believe the protection they provide us is well worth the expense.

It is my opinion that not joining the association is not Mustachian, but it is cheap.  Many people don't join because of political reasons, since the national association supports almost entirely Democratic candidates.  But on the local level, the association really is there to serve the teachers' best interests.  While I don't agree with everything the national or even state level association does, I whole-heartedly support my local.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
