Feature phone with MicroSDXC?
« on: September 12, 2014, 01:20:59 PM »
I have a simple candy bar feature phone that's giving up the ghost and since I usually have it in my pocket along with an MP3 player (Sandisk Sansa E250) that I put a 64 GB MicroSDXC card in to store all my music, I figured I'd try to simplify and get a replacement phone that can also double as a music player so I only carry one device.

However, I can't seem to figure out which (if any) cheap feature phones actually support cards with > 64GB capacity. Some devices just have a problem with the default file system on these cards which is easily solved by reformatting them to FAT32, but I think there's also a hardware difference as I've tried using mine in a friend's Blu Samba TV (which claims to support cards up to 32 GB) with no luck.

Is anyone doing something similar, or has come across a phone that can handle the larger card sizes? I don't really have any other criteria for the phone other than being GSM and as cheap as possible.

Are you interested in a particular prepaid phone service? Tracfone has some feature phones that are ok, can be bought really cheap, have mp3 players on them and take microSD cards (not sure if they go up to 64gb for them though.)

Two that I am familiar with are the LG840g and the Motorola EX431g.

I keep a LG840g going for my bf to use sometimes. If I didn't already have a Tracfone Android phone I would use one of these.
I have an unactivated EX431g that I set aside as a backup for the LG840g.
I think they are both GSM phones on AT&T.

Look on ebay at the shopcelldeals seller. They usually have cheap prices for Tracfones and I have ordered a few things from them with no problems. Their prices for bundles of a phone and minutes are usually great deals.

I bought a used HTC Droid Incredible for about $50 last year (they are about the same price now on swappa) which has a Micro SD card. I use it on Page Plus - the Verizon pay-as-you-go thing and it costs me $12 a month generally.  Not a feature phone but a very good deal, I thought.

Best you're going to get on the SDHC card size support front is 32GB these days with the phone style you're after, which is still a crap ton of music. (There aren't as many smartphones on the market that even support 64GB as you'd think yet, either.)

Here's your options. Of that lot, the Nokia C3-01 looks the most promising (especially cost-wise) if you're patient with the listings on Ebay. You'll probably spend around $50-80 on the thing (which I know seems like a lot for a "feature phone"), but that's kind of the price point you're looking at for all the features you're after. The Samsung Manhattan might also be a viable option as well at a slightly lower price point. Just be sure you buy the things carrier unlocked.

it's rarer these days to find, but I like my phones to have a fm antenna so I can listen to music without streaming/downloading

I used to have an unactivated LG Merquee Android phone that had an FM radio and a thermometer. I think you can get them pretty cheap on ebay now.
