Favorite decaf teas?
« on: December 02, 2017, 02:28:02 PM »
My DH wants to keep the house colder than I prefer, so I have taken to drinking a cup of decaf tea in the afternoon to ward off the chill a bit.   Bought a box of cheap generic bags from Fred Meyer, but would like to mix it up a bit.   I prefer black teas to herbal, so options seem fairly limited.  Cannot drink anything with caffeine in it after 1pm or so or it affects my sleep.

Tea lovers of the MMM forums, any recommendations?   I was using Tetley decaf bags I got from someone on buy nothing, but ran out of those and FM doesn't stock the decaf version....

Trader Joe's makes a harvest blend tea that I looooooooove. It's seasonal though. Last year I didn't stock up. This year I will not make that mistake ;)

My fave is Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice.

When I go off coffee (which I do at times), I will drink Celestial Seasonings Morning Thunder (has caffeine) but spice it up with the Bengal Spice (so one bag of each).  If I don't want caffeine, I'll just drink the BS straight.  :)

Ooh, yes, Celestial Seasonings does a mandarin orange spice one that's wonderful as well. I think there's some artificial flavors in it (like many of the celestial seasoning teas) so I don't buy it, but when DH brings it home from work it's a nice treat =)

I just checked the BS box.  Nothing artificial is listed.  Hope they are not being sneaky.

I have not tried the Mandarin Spice.

Trader Joe's decaf Irish Breakfast. I add honey and sometimes milk. Their seasonal decaf green peppermint tea is also wonderful and doesn't taste like green tea. Have fun experimenting.

Stash had quite a few non caffeinated teas.  My favorite is Meyer Lemon.

I also am sensitive to caffeine. I do especially like equal exchange decaf Chai tea -OMG that is great. next to that I can tolerate twinigs chai tea bags in decaf , but I throw in another plain decaf tea bag to up the tea flavoe. My favorite is rose hips and hibscus but rose ips is a sedative and I have felt the sedating effects in the morning , doI drink decaf coffee then.

We made Tea Advent Calendars for gifts this year. 25 different varieties of Stash Teas so I'm sure I'll have a few ideas by the end of it.

Today was Vanilla Nut Creme. Here's D's review:

My first comment while trying it "This is pleasant, and I don't hate it. Which is surprising because I normally don't like vanilla teas."

This was a pretty darn tasty tea, and I could see myself buying a box of it. It's pretty mild, but the vanilla/nut/creme are all noticeable and balanced. Works well as a warming afternoon decaf, but I could see a caffeinated version being worthwhile too.

I'm a fan of Stash decaf teas, but my all-time favorite is Tazo's Passion Tea. Alas, it is herbal. It's derived from Passion Flower, IIRC. It is strong and needs no sugar. Target is a pretty reliable source, though I prefer Winco. (With a nod to the great Pacific Northwest, employee-owned grocery store.)

South African Rooibos tea is my all time favorite. I thought it was hard to find in the USA though.

Not too hard, but I am not sure how it compares to the "real stuff". It's my other favorite tea. Drinking it reminds me of the #1 Ladies Detective Agency Book Series. I always wonder if the "bush tea" they enjoy immensely is rooibus.

Do you like mint? One of my favorites is Numi Moroccan Mint with a good bit of honey. I could drink it all day long. It's also really refreshing as an iced tea.

As far as black tea, Paisley Tea Co. has a decaf English Breakfast tea that is just as good as the real deal. The problem is it can be kind of hard to hunt down, even online. I've had decent luck at places like T.J. Maxx, however.

I'll second the recommendation for Rooibos, it's a nice alternative to black tea. I've tried one that was vanilla flavored which was very, very tasty.

I have been replacing my nightly glass of wine with a nightly cup of herbal tea - turns out that over time the nightly glass of wine results in being able to zip one's jeans, OOPS.

Some of my favorites are Trader Joe's Candy Cane Green Tea and Pumpkin Rooibos, Stash's Lemon Ginger and Sunny Orange Ginger. I like tart fruity teas and Celestial Seasonings has an assortment that includes raspberry zinger, blueberry, cherry, something else I can't remember right now.

I'm glad to see other votes for rooibos.  I think it has a wonderful flavor that is between tea and coffee.  I don't particularly like the flavor of hot tea, but enjoy rooibos hot.  Vanilla rooibos also has a wonderful flavor.

Another that I'll vote for is Tension Tamer from Celestial Seasons.  Incredibly good.  It has its own distinct flavor that I've always attributed to the hops that is in it.  I have not tasted anything like it anywhere.

So I'm curious how many people aren't reading the prompt (decaf) vs don't realize that black and green teas are typically caffeinated? Legitimately curious. Seems like something people might not know.

Free almost always tastes better than its non-free counterpart. Thats the same brand as my fave, so I'd totally give it a try.

I know Barry's (Irish brand) has a decaffeinated black tea (in a blue box).  I have not tried the decaffeinated, but their caffeinated black teas are excellent.  The ShopRite in my area carries them.

You can get decaf black tea, though. I can't do caffeine almost at all (I use it solely for migraine treatment and dire insomnia, like if I have to go to work on 3 hours sleep) but I don't like herbal teas, so I drink exclusively black decaf teas. I haven't tried that many but I like Twinings Irish Breakfast.

Another vote for this one, from someone who pays for it. Intoxicating fragrance, lovely color, delicious flavor with a hint of mint. I had it one at a restaurant kind of randomly, and afterward made it a point to get some. I had to order it from Amazon. Well worth it.

Oh certainly! I just meant, I wonder if everyone is assuming decaf on the black teas they're recommending? Some (IME) taste very different from their caffeinated counterparts. Or if they don't know? Or if they just didn't notice that part of the OP.

Try some looseleaf "red raspberry leaf tea" or "red raspberry leaves" from the health good store. They are very cheap in bulk and the flavour to me is reminiscent of black tea with a bit of raspberry.

I MUCH prefer it to the pale shadow of tea flavour that mosf "decaf tea" has

Tea that is also good in place of black tea is rooibos or the aforementioned Bengal Spice by Celestial Seasonings. I can drink them with some milk and it's quite nice.

I order a lot of herbal/floral teas in bulk, $6-16 lb where a pound of tea is a TON of  tea, from online tea or spice merchants. I like Seattle spice merchant and Monterey Bay spice co -> https://www.herbco.com/c-18-herbal-teas.aspx

Once you figure out what you like, order the ingredients in bulk and mix yourself! Staples here are lavender, chamomile, rose hips, marshmallow root, hibiscus, and fennel. You can make tisanes too with rooibos.

Bagged decaf green tea, either Trader Joe's, Safeway or other store brand bought in 30/50/100 quantity boxes. I grown to really enjoy it and drink several cups a day (I generally don't drink any calories unless it involves alcohol).

With green tea it's important to make sure the water isn't too hot and to not let it steep more than 60 or 90 seconds.

I also like some of the Celestial Seasoning's herbal mixes, the 2 Tazo ones mentioned previously, and decaf Earl Gray or English Breakfast, but they can get pricey if you drink a lot.

I recently had the blinding flash of insight that by adding some combination of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, and black pepper, I could make any tea I owned into chai tea. This is good for me because I am sitting on a multi year supply of dozens of varieties of tea and I really like variety, which frequently includes different makes of chai tea. I thought rooibos made one of my better chai concoctions :-) . Off to make that now, now that I mention it.

^ I've also recently been adding orange peel, as we recently bought 30 oranges.

I'm loving these ideas! I'm a huge tea/tisane fan. Have you checked out some of the specialty shops? I get a lot of teas and tisanes from www.teasource.com. Evening in Missoula, Margaret's Soother, and Starfire Licorice are my favorites.

I second the Tazo Wild Sweet Orange, it's in my desk here at work right now. Good Earth also has a yummy decaf version of their signature tea (heavy in cinnamon, FYI).

I came on here to tell you about my favourite tea - but others beat me to it! Since I gave up coffee I've been drinking this every morning.

I also like lots of teas from '2 leaves and a bud' - especially the alpine berry blend. They ship for free if you spend $50, so when they have 25% sales, I stock up and buy enough to get free shipping!

Another vote for Rooibos.

I generally prefer black tea over green, and don't typically like herbal teas. Technically, Rooibos is classified as herbal, but I find the flavor is a lot closer to black tea than the stereotypical herbal.

It's not the most common tea, but I can generally find one or two varieties in the local natural grocery store. And any tea store should also carry some options.

Not sure how sensitive you are to caffeine, but white teas are also lower in caffeine than green and black.
