Favorite activity tracking apps?

Contemplating a fit bit to track steps, but would prefer a free app. Anyone have some favorites to share?

I use map my run / map my walk/ map my ride.  They are all connected.  I have map my walk and map my ride on my phone.

If I go running, I use map my walk and manually go into the computer and change it to a run.  Just because.

Also it allows me to type in swimming, weights, etc. on the computer

I've heard good things about runkeeper and strava, but no experience with those.

I actually have a Fitbit Charge 2 (got it at a discounted rate through my health insurance and they deposit extra "free money" into my HSA based on my daily activity levels) and I think it's great.

I'm always wearing it (don't always have my smartphone on me) so its data is complete and able to be properly compared day-to-day.  I really like the sleep tracking and all-day heart rate tracking.  It helps track things that aren't explicitly exercise, but I can see how it affects my heart rate and day-to-day activity levels (things like 4 hours of intensive car maintenance, an hour of cutting down branches in the yard, or my presently-9,000-miles-away girlfriend calling me and telling me she lost her passport).

After 3-4 years of obsessively wearing my Fitbit everyday I decided last week that I knew enough about my activity patterns to stop using it. I had a Fitbit Zip and I liked that it was cheap (bought it used off ebay), and the battery lasted a very long time (months). I would give it to you, except that I stepped on it a few years ago which means the screen doesn't work. This was a non-issue for me because I could still sync it to my phone and see my steps on there, but it can't be connected to a new account without typing in a code it displays on screen. I still use the Strava app to track my bike rides.

I used the Samsung built-in one (S Health?) and Google Fit for a while. I liked Google Fit better but I forget why...possibly because it did a better job tracking biking/walking/running automatically? Unfortunately, it didn't play nice with either my phone or S Health (tended to turn on the heart rate meter function, overheated it, and drained the battery?? It was a known bug with no solution as far as I could find) so I had to uninstall it at the time and never went back. The issue might be resolved, I don't know, it's been a while. Worth trying, for sure!

I didn't try it again because eventually, I splurged on a Fitbit Charge HR and I think it was one of the best $100ish I've ever spent for the other changes it's inspired me to make and how it's changed how I look at fitness/energy balance/etc. Love seeing what gets my heart rate going! But if you just want to track steps, it's probably overkill.
