Title: Exhaust repair
Post by: BlueMR2 on November 20, 2017, 04:48:29 PM
I've got a bolt that keeps vibrating loose, but it's up on the exhaust manifold.  Too hot for normal threadlocker.  I found something called Resbond 907TS Blue that should do the trick (blue threadlocker strength, so hand tool removable still, but good for the higher temperatures that it'll see).  However, the minimum order is $100 for something I only need 3 drops of, and has just a 6 month shelf life!  Any cheaper options out there?  Has to do 900 degrees C minimum.

Use red.  IF it holds (I don't think it's rated up that high), the heat will weaken it and you shouldn't have trouble removing it.  I've hand tool removed an awful lot of stuff held in with red.

You could also drill the head and safety wire it if you wanted, but that's probably overkill.

Are you sure you're torquing it to spec?  It shouldn't back out if it's properly tightened.

Torqued to spec, 49 N-m per the factory manual.  I do have some red here.  Says it's good for 450 F, so about 1200 degrees short of where it *should* be, but I guess it wouldn't hurt...  :-)

If it comes to drilling and safety wiring I'll involve a shop as I just don't see a good way to do that for this location.

Funny, I'd always heard of exhaust bolts breaking from being stuck.  Never imagined vibrating loose would be a problem, but Google revealed it's actually quite the problem on smaller displacement, higher RPM engines!

I had a dream that I was a car muffler last night. Woke up exhausted.

I found $10 worth of a smaller amount on eBay:

After talking with some locals, I ended up ordering some Rocksett instead.  Temperature range is comparable, with a similar locking strength, but also is supposed to be more vibration resistant as well as having a long shelf life.  Very popular in firearms assembly I'm told.  We'll see how it holds up in my automotive application!

I think you're a little lost.  You must be looking for the bad jokes thread (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/off-topic/tell-me-your-stupid-jokes/) :)
