Title: Europe the week before Christmas?
Post by: EconDiva on September 01, 2016, 02:06:48 PM
I have some award miles to burn and may be off the last 2 weeks of the year. I was going to only spend one week away somewhere warm in the Caribbean.

But now I'm considering going away for the full two weeks and doing the first week somewhere in Europe since the flight would be free. I might be able to secure a home exchange while there for free accommodations as well.

I was wondering where in Europe people might suggest would be a good solo trip that time of year?

What sort of trips do you like? City/country/culture/solitude/bustling?

I'd suggest a good festive city, with Christmas Markets in fulls swing - Germany, Belgium and France have great ones. London, where I am, is also very festive, albeit usually a bit on the wet and chilly side.

It's not the ideal weather for outdoor activities, unless you are hardy... but renting a cottage can be very cosy with great walks and a good fire going. It's usually good weather for cycling, and places like vineyards will usually be open.

And I do have a thing for Italy, the food and wine is fabulous, and all the history is amazing....
