Post by: RookieSurfer on November 14, 2015, 08:22:52 AM
Does anyone know if Vanguard differentiate companies or investments that are environmentally damaging or ethically unsound?

That would be a big no. Apple and exxon are in the top five holdings for vti.

Vanguard offers more than one fund - look into their Social Index Fund (https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/snapshot?FundId=0213&FundIntExt=INT) to see if their criteria match yours.

2.3% oil&gas.

One could argue that emerging markets are the most ethical investment, because the growth of emerging markets is lifting billions out of poverty and hunger. Schwab and Vanguard both have these ETFs; I think Schwab's has a slightly lower ER.

Normally if ethics are a concern you wouldn't deal with a company like Vanguard at all since they do sell products that aren't "ethical". One or two funds wouldn't absolve them . . . it seems with one post this person is trolling anyway
