How often should this be changed?

I've read it's every 5 years for the braided metal ones but suspect it's partly down to your water quality as to how long they will last you at a site.  Haven't checked prices on them but suspect it's cheap insurance to replace them often versus the cost of a leak if you're not home to stop it quickly.

It should be changed? I'll have to change mine (2011 machine, came with the house when I bought it in 2015).

I don't ever recall my parents "changing" the hoses, but the w/d were in a store room with a drain.

I have always lived in multistory houses and condos. I was flooded out about 10 years ago by a burst washer hose in the condo above. I definitely worked in my favor since insurance replaced the ceiling (no more popcorn!), painted the entire living room, and replaced the carpet & pad and laminate flooring in the entire unit.

The "metal hoses" are usually not real metal these days. The hoses are standard reinforced rubber with an outside monofilament braid over the hose. The monofilament (basically woven thick fishing line) is colored gray to look like metal. This should perform as well as a metal wrapped hose which costs several times more.

By the way, the biggest issue I have encountered when helping friends chase down small leaks are cracked hose washers and leaky compression seals around the shaft for the faucet. Both are easy fixes.

Growing up, we never changed them and they were the cheap rubber ones.  Outlasted the washer.  The plumbers I talked since I bought my own house have warned me to replace them every year.

If they let go and it it's unnoticed, it could cause a tremendous amount of damage depending on where the water ends up going.

Never actually heard of one failing on a washer in my circle, but out of the 3 hose failures on my cars, 2 of them were hoses that were barely 2 weeks old...  So, I'm a bit concerned about any new hose too!

I installed these floodcheck hoses.. They are supposed to be the finest available.. Not cheap but the best.

They certainly do seem to be very well made but flexible. I have them in my house and rental unit.

There is another brand called "floodsafe" which have a check valve in the hose. These are nothing more than cheap vynil hoses with a stainless braid and a valve. The problem is the the hose would have to completely fail for the valve to work and could easily cause major damage in the meantime.
