Electric Lawnmower?
« on: May 08, 2017, 11:36:01 AM »
Anybody have experience with or a recommendation on a good electric, cordless lawnmower?

Moving out of the maintentance free townhouse and into a new home and will have to start mowing for the first time in about 15 years.  Yard is small enough that I think an electric lawnmower will be the way to go.  I don't want to have to bag anything so am looking for a solid mulching mower.

I think that's the one I used to have when I had a small yard.  Moving the cord could get a little tedious, but overall I enjoyed it.  Fairly quiet, never got bogged down even with spots over a foot tall. (I was really bad about keeping the back yard cut).  I never used the bag part only mulched with mine.  Mine was a Black and Decker I just don't recall if it was that model.  I definitely spent less than $150 on mine.

I have a corded electric, works fine, 200$ from Lowes.  Depending on the yard you can have trouble getting a good flow with the cord following behind, but mine is fine.  I choose to go all electric for yard tools, this gives zero engine maintenance or fuel hassles.  Also with gas you may need to winterize it and drain fuel etc.  My electric cuts as well as any gas push mower.

this is what I have: search lowes "Kobalt 13-Amp 21-in Deck Width Corded Electric Push Lawn Mower with Mulching Capability"

also make sure the extension cords you get are rated for the mowers amps.

I just have a cheap corded one from Canadian Tire. I specifically didn't want one with a battery because I didn't want to leave it charging all the time and I don't want to deal with replacing the battery when it no longer holds a charge. I also wanted the lightest possible unit because there's a flight of stairs between the font and back yards. My corded mower should last for decades and won't require any new parts. If your yard is that small, having a cord trail behind you is likely less hassle than dealing with keeping the battery charged.

pretty good deal on this one.

Pretty good reviews on Amazon and HD.  Will have to go take a look after work and see if my local store has it at that price.

Fully automated electric mower is coming in June.
http://world.honda.com/worldnews/2017/p170413Leave-it-to-Miimo.html

Not very mustashian as it costs $2500, but it looks pretty cool!  I love this stuff, but I'm still waiting for automated vacuums to be worth it!

There are several other brands of robotic mowers already out there, but the cost is a bit much.

i think the mowers will be worth it once they are GPS based not wire based.  like this one.

https://thekobi.com/meet-kobi/

i mean in 5 years lawn services wont be necessary.

I would recommend a Landroid robotic mower. It's expensive to setup, but once it's done it basically takes care of itself.

Other than that a cheap corded lawnmower really is a nice way to go for small lawns. It's a little kerfuffle with the cord from time to time. But I have had my mower for over 10 years and it has never gone wrong. No maintenance, no things to change, it just keeps on working.

robo mowers wont take off til you can just set it on the lawn teach some GPS points and call it a day.  buring perimeter cable isnt practical when you're paying 3k for something. IMO.

And still for those of us who did that simple job in an afternoon with a buddy and a few beers the lawnmower robot now just works.

Besides the cable doesn't get buried. It gets pushed in to the ground with small pegs. Simple and quick.

Amazon has it at 45% 5 star and 28% 1 star reviews.  So it is great if it works for you or you want it to do what it does.

But 2 batteries make little sense in my opinion. The good robot mowers just "do their job" and return to their little dock and recharge. So you never actually have to change the battery until it wears out. My dads landroid has been running for a few years now and it just keeps working.

With the Landroid it's a little bit important to keep the firmware updated. It's a simple procedure involving a usb stick.

My dad went so far as to build a little dog-like shelter for the mower. Complete with it's own name sign that says 'Skalle' which is a nickname on Skildpadde that translates to Turtle. :)

I couldn't pull off the price match, but I was expecting that.  I'm not very good at that persuasive haggling stuff. And the HD in my town is notorious for being as stingy as possible on the price matches.

But now I really want this mower.  Oh well, I have about a month to find it cheaper.

Yeah. It was $449 in my store.  It was some type of local mark down in the OP's store.

I have a Black & Decker cordless electric mower and it's been great. We've got about 1/3 acre and it can mow the whole thing on a charge. We've had it for 2.5 years and the battery hasn't degraded much, either.

We've also got the B&D cordless electric string trimmer, and it's also worked really well for us.

I have this one: https://www.worx.com/24v-cordless-lawn-mower-wg775.html?gclid=CPWVsbL14tMCFcK4wAodIwcG3g&gclsrc=aw.ds

It works great. It is a bit small (14 inches wide) but we have a small yard. Does both front a back with plenty of charge to spare. Very light a maneuverable. Less than $200.

Those robot ones look fantastic! I have a robot vacuum that I love. But I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of figuring out how to connect my disconnected, fenced, front and back yards.

One more question for those who have an electric mower.

Since these are fairly light, can they be hung on wall hooks?

Mine could be. We store the battery inside charging, so without the battery its super light. The battery isn't heavy, either, we just don't store it with the mower.

I have a Black & Decker with a removable battery I got at Lowes for around $200 a couple of years ago (on sale, probably).  It's been great.

With the B&D one that I have it would have to be a pretty sturdy hook - the mower weighs about 60 lbs without the battery, which is probably 30 lbs. :-)
