Eggflation
« on: July 09, 2015, 01:36:15 PM »
I had a previous post where I talked about how I dealt with eggflation.  Unfortunately, the situation has gotten worse since then.

To summarize the current situation:  Millions of egg producing birds, 36 million? or so? have been killed to contain a flu outbreak.  Locally this caused eggflation (an increase in the price of eggs).

The first day I noticed this I managed to negotiate a much lower per egg price by buying many, many eggs.

This worked out well for me, as I have been out of the egg market for awhile, since I bought way more than I really needed.

However, my personal supplies are scheduled to egg out before the end of July 2015.  Conservative estimates put eggcovery at sometime in 2017.

Prices continue to climb, and perhaps worse, supplies of eggs are dwindling.  Yesterday at the grocery store, I saw that not only were the egg prices more than double what they were at the beginning of March, but the store had very few eggs.  Usually there are a few hundred dozens, eagerly awaiting my skillet, but I counted fewer than 20 dozen in the entire store.

Between blue bell ice cream not being available and this egg thing, I'm starting to feel like capitalism eggself is failing.

As a practical consideration, one of the tenants of mustachianism is to not buy things when the price is temporarily high, and to stock up when it is low.  But eggs have become a huge part of my food solution.

Does anyone have any ideas on:
1.  An eggsubstitute, low calorie high protein easy to fix and cheap.  Particularly that goes well with just about any veggie side.
2.  An eggotiating opportunity, that is, an alternative way to acquire eggs without the high cost?

A few months ago I had extensively researched getting my own chickens to have my own eggs, but the math just didn't work out for it to be economical.  I remember it felt close though, maybe the newer higher price for eggs just means that getting my own chickens has become an economical eggtunity.

March: $0.21 per egg.
May: $0.31 per egg.
July: $0.55 per egg.

If this situation continues eggsponentially, by early 2017 I'll be able to trade surplus eggs for fortune 500 companies.  Of course, making such a claim would leave me with egg on my face.

I think I'm done.

Well done. A few missed opportunities though.

Yeah, I eat a lot of eggs. Even at $0.50/egg it's still a cheap source of great protein. I'm not stopping even with the neggative trend though. I'll trade some of my nest egg to continue feeding my eggdiction.

This post cracked me up. Dammit. Too slow.

I don't think we'd shell out $0.50 an egg. That's a little eggstreme. Because they're still about $0.25 for us, omeletting them stay on the breakfast menu for now (but no quiches, carbonara, or eggscetera).

Unfortunately, owning chickens sounds like too high of a whisk for us right now (we have a cat...).

$0.50 per egg??

What kind of eggs are these? The other day we bought three dozen for around $6...less than $0.20 / egg (large, plain white eggs)...

$0.50 each! Eggads that's pricey! You'll have to shell out $6 for a dozen.

About once a quarter I get grocery coupons in the mail from Kroger. They have sent "free dozen large eggs" in the past. I consider these to be like bonds of a sort now.

(I also wish I'd used the last one before it eggspired.)

We had some eggflation here in CA a month or so ago, when a dozen plain eggs at TJs went from $1.99 to $3.99.  Now they are back to $2.49.  Regular grocery stores cost more.

99 cent store is $2.19

A dozen at the farmer's market is $6 to $7.

I hatched a plan. We could import some chickens from Canada. Make some serious bank from those mother cluckers. I'm willing to whisk that capital for this eggciting investment opportunity.

Think regular eggs were running $2.69/doz at the grocery store earlier this week.  Saw a sign out for $2 dozen homegrown eggs just down the road.  Appears eggflation is not too severe in our area...

$2/doz for homegrown eggs is a bargain. I would buy a bunch. I've never had one myself, but I hear they are much better than supermarket factory eggs.

Does anyone have any ideas on:
1.  An eggsubstitute, low calorie high protein easy to fix and cheap.  Particularly that goes well with just about any veggie side.

In my area, whole chickens are the cheapest source of protein at $1/lb (or maybe $2/lb for fancy humane/organic/etc. ones). I should note that since USDA "large" eggs are about 1/8 lb each, chicken is cheaper even than eggs whenever eggs cost more than about 13 cents each.

The second-cheapest protein would be shank portion city ham (non-spiral-sliced, of course), followed closely by pork butt (shoulder) and pork loin, which are both around $2/lb. (For the ham, of course, you should have ideally stocked up your chest freezer back around Easter when it was on sale for $1/lb... I don't buy it other times of the year, so I don't know what it would cost now.)

heres a few eggstitutions,
Protein powder can be added to smoothies with fruits and veggies, sometimes you can find it for as cheap as $5/lb and it can be found with almost 100% protein.
boneless skinless chicken breasts can be found for $1.99/lb as well and can be put in almost any veggie dish.
Eggs where I am are at $2.79/lb.
In my experience homegrown eggs are a lot smaller than the large ones I buy in the store.

1lb of chicken breast can usually be found for $1.79 to $3.00 per lb.
1lb of cooked chicken breast provides about 90 grams of protein

At 1.79 a lb that is .019 cents per gram of protein
At 3.00 a lb that is .033 cents per gram of protein
______
A dozen eggs can be found for $3 to as much as $6
A dozen eggs provides about 84 grams of protein

At $3 per dozen that is .035 cents per gram of protein
At $6 per dozen that is .07 cents per gram of protein

______

This eggnalysis does not include fat content.  Eating the thing that provides the egg is currently the better deal.

This is confusing, you should say $0.035 or 3.5 cents, if eggs were only .035 cents per gram of protein I don't think we would be having this conversation.

Eggcelent reminder!  I went through the pile of mail when I got home and found that I did indeed have a coupon for a free dozen.  That should put off armeggeddon for another week or so.

I'm pleased at the response this thread has received.  Eggs work so well for me because of the built in portion control.  I can eggsily stick to one or two eggs per meal, and so limit myself to 40c-100c (wince), but when I do chicken it's easy to end up eating the whole chicken.

Ultimately, I think the absolute value of the dollars involved is going to have to trump any eggsideration of percentegges.  If I spend $24/mo on eggs instead of $8/mo it isn't going to break the egg.
