Edmunds True Cost to Own - Maintenance
« on: July 14, 2019, 11:45:12 AM »
Hi. I was putting together some numbers using Edmunds TCO tool to estimate some of my car expenses. Maintenance on there seems quite high. Does anyone else think so or am I missing something. Our Prius is put down for 4,478 for 5 years. That's about 900/year. I don't get that when I add up oil changes, new tires, brakes. What could they be including that I'm not thinking about? I may cut the number for my personal TCO calcs.

Here are the things I can think of:
Change oil every 10k miles(I do myself at 5k miles)
Change air filter every 30k miles
Change cabin air filter every 30k miles
Change spark plugs at 120k miles.

Everything else on the maintenance schedule is inspect.

I agree that their estimates often don't make sense. I find the tool useful when comparing between cars - for example camry vs corolla vs prius. But often their estimates for insurance and maintenance are too high, especially if you do some maintenance yourself. And they don't include some taxes and fees. There are some more expensive items (tires, brakes, etc) that could crop up, and might be expensive at the dealership.

I would budget based on my actual expenses with the car. And I would add some more in with an older car, because it's possible a larger repair bill may come up.
