$0. Internet.
If I'm actively looking for news to read, I tend to go to BBC News; if there's a particular thing I want to know more about, normally I'll just search for it on Google, that usually leads me to The Independent, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, among many other sites. I don't consider any of those individual sources to be as reliable or as interesting as The Economist, but collectively they do a perfectly good job, and they don't cost $62/year (or in the long run, $1550). Obviously in the US you have a different set of news sources, but the same probably applies.
Also, I don't read the news a whole lot. It's easy to think that whatever happened in the last week is the most important information for you to absorb, but in my experience, most useful/interesting ideas are older than that.
