Easy way to strain almond milk mixture?
« on: July 09, 2015, 07:18:21 AM »
I've started making my own almond milk, and after four batches, have already grown weary of straining through cheesecloth (yes, I grown weary rather easily).  I don't like how the almond meal clumps between the layers of cheesecloth and is hard to get out (I dry the meal to make, in theory, breakfast bars, though so far I only have a growing bag of almond meal in my pantry).

So, is there an easier way?  Are mesh strainers fine enough?  Does anyone have a nut bag and does that work well?  Other ideas?

Thanks!

Have you tried a coffee filter?

Can you make any bag from a fine, but old pillowcase ( that you sterilize)?

I did that for my jelly bag and straining yougurt and it is so much better!

Buy a nut milk bag.  $10 or so.  Super easy to use and clean.

I also use it to strain yogurt.

ETA: This is the one I have, but I'm sure others are good, too. http://www.elliesbest.com/products/

Thank you--all things I hadn't thought of.  Will have to give them a try, starting with the cheapest/easiest and working my way up if I feel the need.

Are you saving money making your own almond milk? It seems pretty cheap where I live.  $2.29 for a carton at Aldis.

Probably not saving money, or not much.  But it tastes so much better and after years of stuffing my face with low-quality food, I'm trying to convince myself I deserve higher quality food and that it's worth the extra effort.

Thanks for the laugh!  Thankfully, it's not quite that involved.  No almond manure to deal with.

I don't make Almond Milk, but we make coconut milk.  We use a fine mesh strainer.  We have one that fits nicely into half gallon mason jar.  I have also heard of a french press method for almond milk, but I haven't tried it myself.

French press--that's a great idea!

Hi,
I use this product to strain teas from herbs. It works ok but does let fine particles slide through. That said, I have not had issues with clumping.
