Title: Don't make the same mistake twice: What could you have done more frugally today?
Post by: jengod on June 16, 2015, 03:17:25 AM
I hope this thread question is taking in the spirit in which it is intended: as a way to refine and improve our practices as good financial stewards and intentional users of the earth's resources, rather than as a means to beat ourselves up or pile on.

Anyway, here are my two regrets for the day:

* I could have easily brought my own coffee and toddler snacks to an indoor playground, but ended up paying for a banana, orange crackers and superfancy organic hippie socks instead. Probably blew $10 all told.
* I spent $3.97 more than necessary buying oregano seedlings. I knew I could get them $1.33 cheaper at a nearby nursery but I bought them at the grocery store.

I like this idea!

So far today I haven't done anything non-frugal except drive my car to work instead of take my bike... but that's not an option right now cause I'm recovering from a knee surgery and can't ride my bike!

Yesterday though... oh man. Impulse buy. I found two vinyls that I've wanted for awhile now on Discogs and, without even really thinking about it, I bought them for about $20 apiece. If you're curious, they were The North Borders by Bonobo and Untrue by Burial.

Forgot to check for a coupon before paying for a typhoid vaccine that is not covered by my insurance.  I don't routinely use coupons for groceries, but recently discovered they can be significant for prescriptions.

I booked an AirBnB the other day. I didn't realize I could have gotten $25 off if I signed up through a referral link until it was too late.

I could have left the railing up on my daughters bunk bed. Then she wouldn't have rolled off the top bunk onto the wood floor, resulting in a doctor visit and arm X-ray.  She's perfectly fine, albeit shook up, but we have a high deductible health plan so the costs ($1000) will all be out of pocket as our HSA is out of funds. Sigh.

I had a special schedule at work today that let me come in about 3 hours later than normal.  I was excited to sleep in and rest up.

I ended up spending one of those precious morning hours perusing a 'sale' online at one of my favorite pre-MMM stores.

I did not buy anything (things were really expensive even with the 'sale' and I did not need anything), but I still wasted an hour that I could have spent more productively or enjoyably.

Yikes, I'm sorry -- glad she is OK.

Forgive me father MMM, for I have sinned.  Today I drove to a meeting in downtown Denver and paid 14.00 to park for an hour and a half.  I could have walked from my free parking at my office... It is only a mile and a half and, 1. Saved the money, 2. Been far less stressed out when I arrived at the meeting, 3. Improved my physical and mental health, and 4. Saved the gas (although the mighty Prius probably only used a teaspoon).

I am sure I will be back to confess more frugal sins.  I hope it's not daily.

I walked to the grocery store during lunch (yay!) to look for a couple of cards to throw money into for upcoming wedding gifts. Unfortunately, the cards were cheaply made and stupid expensive, so I decided against them (yay!). But then, to not waste the trip, I bought myself a $3.59 bar of fancy chocolate (boo!). I did it totally without thinking, and then I got back to work, saw this forum up in my browser, and was disappointed in myself. Better luck tomorrow.

Today I drove instead of rode my bike because I wasn't sure if the mail would fit in my basket.... It could have.

Nothing yesterday, but the day before I went out to lunch with a colleague. I'm just developing a new working relationship across campus, she asked, and I didn't want to be rude.

Fortunately, the air conditioning was broken at the steak place where she wanted to go and I talked her into a much cheaper deli instead, so there's that.
