Dollar Shave Club - What do Mustachians think?
« on: December 10, 2015, 01:34:07 PM »
So, is the Dollar Shave Club just a big gimmick or a good deal?  Does anyone here do it?  I am a female who would use it for shaving my legs.  So, "just let your beard grow" isn't an option.  Same thing goes for, "Just don't shave your legs."  Not my thing.

Well, a safety razor would easily be cheaper in the long run. There are some tailored for women.

My understanding is the razors they sell are sourced from Dorco, although I don't know this for a fact.  You can buy them directly from Dorco, and they often have discounts, coupons etc, if you just look around a little.

Correct. They are from Dorco (unless it's a myth, but very well known tho). Just bought 10 cartridges + handle directly from Dorco for $20 (with a discounted shipping). Will last me few years - I rarely change carts altho shave almost daily. Good stuff thus far - after almost 2 months still very sharp

Still too much to spend on shaving if you ask me.

I haven't bought a blade in years. I use this to make "disposable" blades last for months. My record was about a year.

This deal from Dorco is ~$2 per disposable cartridge. If it gives me 8-12 months of comfortable shaving, that is $2-3 per year (my old Gillette fusion lasted 1.5 years but last 2-3 months were hell ;)). This $15 sharpener will be justified only after 8 to 10 years

How often do you shave, and how much surface area? I used to go through blades every month or two.

4-5 times per week. Face only. (For other parts I use older blades :)). One brand name (Gillette Fusion) cartridge typically lasted 8-12 months, with 1.5 years as a record. Compare Fusion vs Dorco prices, though. Even if Dorco lasts 8 months, it's a big win

Yes, they're from Dorco, and yes DSC is a ripoff.

"The Humble Twin" is actually the Pace Comfort Thin II as DSC's cheapest one and starts at $1 a blade with "free" handle, and an extra $2 shipping, making it actually $3/blade. The Pace Comfort Thin II combined with 30 blades direct from Dorco USA can be bought together for $26.45 and free shipping.

DSC? $3/blade, "free" handle.
Dorco direct? 76.5¢/blade, $3.50 handle plus one free blade.

That math only gets worse with the higher blade counts.

Bonus: If you already use the Gillette Atra, Contour, or Vector, you should be able to use these cartridges with that handle.

Edit: Never mind, I noticed that DSC ships a 5 pack every month now, making them 60¢/blade. My apologies.

My husband gets this and I didn't think it was a rip off.  He gets 4 blades every other month (you don't HAVE to do it monthly) and gets charged $6.  I can imagine that if you aren't an every day shaver you could even do it every 3rd month.  He seems happy with the quality.

I took a long hiatus from shaving my head but I started again a few weeks ago. That mean I shaver every other day. My razor seems to be losing some stem. Very timely for this thread I might look into order some blades and or the straightening.
