I used to own a 2001 Peugeot 306. I loved how it drove (I still miss the steering on that thing), and the servicing costs weren't too bad with a specialist mechanic (still a bit more than a Corolla or a Commodore but not huge). Not sure what it'd be with any old mechanic, many of them probably hike up the price because it's a European brand.
However after I overheated it, it was never the same afterwards.
From a Mustachian perspective, you're probably better off sticking with something more common like a Corolla, i30 or Mazda3. That said, I didn't regret owning that Peugeot (even though it was financially a poor choice). These days I drive a comparatively boring old Holden :)
