Has anyone delivered newspapers/weekly ads?
« on: June 21, 2017, 09:25:33 AM »
In my town, we have one dying newspaper and a couple of weekly ad packets that get delivered. Has anyone ever done this for some extra cash? I've googled around, but can't seem to find any indication if the pay makes it worthwhile. I was thinking more about the once weekly ad deliveries, which would be more conducive to my schedule than an every day of the week thing.

I did this at two points in adulthood.

When I walked really fast -almost ran- the higher paying one worked out to almost $3/hr.

I was once told that some countries pay a good rate -similar to those carrying mail- so I expect the results to be region-specific. My experiences were across the country from each other in Canada.

Just remembered I have an adult friend who also delivered papers. She was paid the same abysmally low rate, but found it worth it for these reasons:

She is the most financially strategic and frugal person I know, so every dollar is valuable to her.
She finds it gets her exercising (she does 3x/week).
She liked knowing her neighbourhood and neighbours, and found this enhanced that connection.
It's one of the rare jobs she can do with her kid (with disabilities) alongside.

When I talked with the person from another country about delivering, she was shocked at the low pay. I explained that it's considered a kid job, paying for a fancy popsicle or -after some weeks- perhaps movie tickets. She said in her country it was considered a serious career -with responsibility akin to carrying mail, such that only adults would be given it...and be paid according to adult needs.
