Dentists/ Dental Hygienist Input Requested: Change of Career
« on: April 15, 2018, 12:10:05 PM »
I am looking for input on hiring decisions for dental hygienists.

I have been in a Fortune 100 company for the past 10 years.  Part of the reason I want to FIRE is to spend time with my kids, be able to pick them up from school. Mega company expects 45+ hours, females to dress up and wear heels.  If you succeed has more to do with politics than job performance. I get easily sidetracked when I start to vent about this company...

I'm 35, and I make 150K with a full bonus -  my husband thinks I'm crazy to move to a lower paying job.  Based on what we've saved so far, we should be "fine".

I have been running numbers on retiring, living off husbands salary, side hustles, remote jobs, etc.  One alternative career that peaked my interest is dental hygiene.  It offers the flexibility and a decent hourly wage ~35/hour.  I could get insurance/etc through my husband's job so that is not a problem.

Questions:
1) Out of the 100 resumes, what are the initial screening criteria to remove candidates? GPA, school prestige? online school?
2) What is the next layer of screening?
3) What factors determines the ultimate hiring decision?
4) If a 40 year old, previous had a masters in engineering, went to an online dental hygiene school and applied, would that be a red flag? What would the candidate need to do to ensure hiring?
5) Do introverts do well at dental hygiene? I imagine since its 1/1 with a patient that makes it easier.
6) How much does physical appearance determine hiring?

Thank you!
