Which work schedule would you prefer?
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:52:09 AM »
Hi there! Sparechange plans to go PT sometime next year, and thought it might be fun to tap into the wisdom of our mob to consider some of the possible scheduling options. Which of these do you think you'd prefer to work, and why? I will be earning 12% pto, if that influences your thoughts in any way.

Option 1: One week on, followed by one week off. This would be 4 or 5 weekdays of 8 hour shifts.

Option 2: Two weeks on, followed by two weeks off. This would also be 4 or 5 weekdays of 8 hour shifts per week.

Option 3: Two consecutive days, followed by 5 days off. This would be two 8hr or two 12hr shifts.

Personally, I'd probably go with option 2.  The longest "get shit done" work sessions and the longest breaks.

I would be an option 3 kind of person, I think. I get well rested with a good 5 days off from work. a full week or more and I begin to forget what the heck I was doing the last time, along with my effort and motivation tapering with increased duration of the work week.

What goals do you have with your time?

If traveling is a goal, then option 2 is pretty good (maybe option 1).
If spending time at home and having time for hobbies/local stuff, then option 3.

I'd probably do option 3, but that's because I don't value travel that much and the travel I do like can be done pretty easily with 5 consecutive days off.

Yeah, I can see that. Option 2 would have 16 or 17 straight days off.

The nice thing about option 3 is that every Monday becomes a "Thursday". I do think that really keeps the motivation up, although all of these schedules are so different from my current one it's hard to foresee exactly how I will respond.

Honestly, that's TBD. I'm not sure how much traveling will figure into my interests, as I haven't done much of it. I agree that option 2 would be a no brainer if travel was a frequent undertaking.
