Our nest egg will soon reach the 300k mark. Living here in Europe however doesn't allow us to stop having a salary income yet. We can manage fine for the moment spending about 25000 euro per year, but the nest egg would of course soon be depleted at that rate.

We have no ties to Belgium anymore however (are renting for the moment, we both have jobs but we can leave those without any pains, our daughters are adults with good jobs and leading independent lives), so we're looking for countries/places where an annual budget of about 12000 euro would do. We're willing to work the odd job now and then, but only if we feel like it.

The main reason why we're looking at quiting both our jobs now already and leaving Belgium is our age (55, 49). We don't want to postpone things anymore until I'm over 67 (pension ages are changing here, pensions are lowered with each new government, nothing is done here to give the older work force decent conditions and incentives to continue on the job, quite the contrary!). We'd like to start our FI- life now wherever conditions would permit.

I'd love to hear from people who actually are in places that allow a decent life for about 12000 a year :)

thanks! Jan

We live in India and our current expenses are way below the 12000 euro mark. Depending on the city you can easily live on 500-1000 euro a month. I am not really sure but I have not heard of retiree visas here.

If you do have any ancestral link to the country you might want to look into it. Otherwise I know a few people who are currently in Thailand living a retiree life for almost the same amount.
I would look at countries like Malaysia, Thailand etc. From what I believe it possible to get retiree visa if you do confirm to certain age restrictions. I am not sure how much you like travelling but a lot of people travel the world well under that budget.

I seems like a lot of South America and Southeast Asia would fit that budget with minor adjustments.

Have you thought of Eastern Europe?  I am not sure how far your money will go, but it seems like it would take you a lot further.

It depends on what you want to do when you are retired. Do you plan to travel at all? If I just wanted to not be in a cubicle anymore I would consider opening a small b&b in a pretty place in eastern Europe.

Poland would be a nice quality of life on that amount.
