Title: Deal sites?
Post by: johnstein on March 03, 2015, 10:13:07 AM
What deal sites do you use for scoring discounts?

I use bensbargains.net, slickdeals, and fatwallet.

I know most of these sites are just recycling info from each other, but do you have other ones you guys use that are good and informative?

I've stopped using pretty much all deal sites because I felt encouraged to spend money to save it, but I know they can be helpful.

I liked Hip2Save (a daily list of coupon ideas, free stuff, and great Target/drug store sales) and Price Grabber (where you name a specific item and it tells you when that items price has fallen).

I use slickdeals so I can enter keywords and get a notification when something is a good deal.

I'm a huge Amazon consumer so I find http://camelcamelcamel.com (http://camelcamelcamel.com) invaluable.  Allows me to track historical prices on Amazon, and set desired price threshold. I then receive an email when the price drops.

I've gotten some pretty good bargains on http://dealnews.com/ (http://dealnews.com/).

Always finding great deals on this site, most for $100 or less.  I usually fill up my shopping cart and have blown my whole paycheck the minute it hits my bank account :)

All kidding aside, I agree with mandy_2002, most of what hits deal sites is consumerism garbage (high end TVs, video games, top of the line cameras, sports-fan apparel, gimmicky electronics, etc) and people get compelled to scoop it up because it's 90% off instead of questioning whether they even need a blender with 3 horsepower or whether a normal 1/2HP one for 1/10th the price would be just as functional for normal purposes.

But for rare instances where it's useful....slickdeals and fatwallet are both ok and I'll check them infrequently on the off chance there's something useful there.  Fatwallet can have some good freebies in the forums, but I find it more hassle than it's worth, plus a lot of their freebies or deals are through exploiting loopholes in targeted programs where the originator didn't put in safeguards to protect from someone in CA getting a freebie meant for a person in NY.

Slickdeals.  I removed the shortcut from my browser bar because I kept going there.  Now I go much less frequently. :P

deal sites == impulse buying sites

I stay away from them because I like my money and don't need more useless crap.

Not necessarily. I need tires soon and just found $140 in promotions from Discount Tire Direct, then called my local Discount Tire store and even beat that price.
