Dead printer, ideas for a new one?
« on: June 28, 2014, 03:12:04 PM »
My husband's printer of over ten years is dead, I killed it this morning.  Does anyone have recommendations for a new, hard working scanner/printer?

I bought this recently. I`m happy with the clean copies and no more printer cartridges. I haven`t spent much time figuring out features such as multi-page scanning but I know it can be done. It comes with toner but it`s not a full size one and I purchased a new one to have on hand. I think I ordered the toner from Newegg.

Sorry, I should have mentioned, I need color.

Laser printer.  Unless you print photos the laser toner lasts much longer than ink jet cartridges.  The toner can also be refilled about 3 times before new ones need to be purchased.  We've had our printer for a year and are still on the same toner cartridges (brother color laser).  Go to you tube to see how to do it, quite simple.  $30 will buy a kit to refill all 4 toner cartridges twice.

+1 to the laser. We broke down and bought a color laser printer after our last ink jet died. It wasn't all that expensive, couple hundred bucks, and oh my god is it ever better. The cost per sheet is lower in terms of ink. Also, I no longer buy printers frequently. If yours was 10 years old, you'll be in for an unpleasant surprise if youbuy a new ink jet;  they're practically disposable.

HP CP1525. It's been about a year or a little more, so they may be on to the next model. If I recall, we found a sale to get that price.

+2 to the laser.

If you print a lot of photos or don't want to pay the large upfront cost for a laser, look into after market CIS (Continuous Ink Supply) kits and get a printer to suit. I know a bunch of different ones can be found on amazon for around $30 including ink. The best park is ink is cheap (about $5 a bottle) and lasts for ages. If you will just get frustrated if/when the lines block (usually because nobody prints anything for 3 months or more) this isn't for you.

How often do you need to print in color?

If you print in black & white most of the time, an old HP office laser printer (from back when HP was a good company) will do you well. I traded a $5 coupon for one in 2007; the half-used toner that came with it lasted for 6 years and the replacement toner cost about $50.

Given the cost of ink for the newer printers, it could make sense to get a cheap used office printer for B&W and a sale-priced (but ink hog) printer for the occasional color printout.
