It feels like he just wants to come out and say that other celebrities are crazy for spending all of their time working when the have "enough" but doesn't want to insult anyone.

If I remember correctly Chris Tucker did a similar thing after Rush Hour 2. He has enough money and just stopped working to be with his family. He came back to do Rush Hour 3 because he had a lot of fun working with Jackie Chan. Since then he has done a little more working, but has been very selective and only does work that he thinks he will enjoy.

I love Dave Chappelle, but he also says in that interview that he has 10 million dollars, but would probably be happier with 40 million more so he could get more things that he wants. Don't know how that could be described as Mustachian.

I saw the clip earlier and thought of this forum. I'm inclined to think Chappelle has a good attitude about things but presented a more generic opinion for the sake of getting a laugh and keeping the interview light. Naturally, I wish he'd driven the point home, but I think he said about as much as we can expect for a general interview.

Well said, and more importantly, more temperate in his delivery than most could pull off.

I like his delivery.  Plus he has Ohio roots.  Dig him.

The "you should try to be happy with what you have" message isn't going to be well-received from somebody who has 10 million dollars. Perhaps he just wanted to avoid making an ass of himself. Or, maybe he thought that "hey, even 10 million dollars isn't enough to make you happy if you aren't already" would be a better way to make his point. Just a couple of possibilities.

To play devil's advocate a bit here... what is $10M compared to his full earning potential? Everybody knows him and he's turned down tons and tons of high-earning gigs. Using the 4% rule and assuming he pays 30% on his income, that's only $280k a year he'd be living on. While that seems like a large amount for some here it's really not for a guy of his status. Compare that to Tom Cruise and Will Smith who have closer to half a billion for doing way shittier work. (Okay, Top Gun and Independence Day were awesome)

I read recently that Keira Knightley pays herself a salary of $50,000/yr out of what she makes (much more).

Chappelle said, "You know, I never really quit. I'm just 7 years late for work."

I had the opportunity to meet Dave Chappelle back in college when he performed at my school because I was involved in the organization that sponsored the show.

First off, he is even in funnier than you can imagine in person the improv he did at my personal expense in the private cocktail party was to die for, my sides are still in pain 15 years later from how hard I laughed.

Anyway I must say for someone who has the ability to earn what he can and he chooses to chill is a far better role model than the great many celebs out there who make a ton and blow it all.

From a fans’ stand point I wish he produced more material as he is f'n hilarious.

I love the guy. Apart from being hilarious, he told a story about what his dad said to him once... I'm paraphrasing, of course, but it was something like: "At some point they're going to offer you so much you're going to have to walk away."

That's the exact opposite of what we hear in our daily lives. "It wasn't enough so I walked." But he said the opposite: "It was so much that I had to walk." And he walked.

Money is fuel for choices and that's a pretty incredible way of thinking.

I read recently that Keira Knightley pays herself a salary of $50,000/yr out of what she makes (much more).

I've heard her ripped to shreds for this, since obviously the majors in her life are all paid for (her mansion, her interior decorating, her cars, etc.) and what she really means is she tries to hold herself to a $50K a year spending budget. BUT I think that given her income and what most of her peers do, I think there is something to be said about what she's doing. Just like Chappelle living on 4% of $10M a year is waaay over most FIRE budgets, it's still pretty great compared to what his peers consume a year, and it's pretty awesome that he walked away from way more. They're unique examples, but good examples for the anti-Mustachian majority!

Chappelle had and apparently still has issues with anyone, including an audience and including producers, suggesting what he should do.  An angry man or just a free spirit?
