Data Analysis/Science Bootcamps?
« on: February 02, 2022, 07:01:59 AM »
Does anyone know any good online data analysis/science bootcamps to take for developing these skills in a career? Ideally it'd be something part time and achievable within 6 months or so, with a professional certificate that I can use on a resume. I have a basic background in python and mathematics, but would love to explore the applications of this field further.

It's overwhelming doing a quick google search, so I wanted to see if anyone has familiarity or experience with some of these before trying something out. Thanks!

What kind of data are you looking to analyze/science?

I ask because like 90% of the gig is just wrangling the data and it really helps to understand it on a level that you're not going to pick up from a generic bootcamp.

For me, it's always best to just pick a project, dive in, and figure things out as I go.  Employers are usually much more impressed with an actual accomplishment and a story on how you did it rather than a framed certificate.

Agreed with the on-the-job application of the skill vs a certificate. But I'm having trouble breaking into the data science field since my background is heavy GIS and geospatial data, so I figured an intense course could be the spark needed to bridge the gap.

I moved into data science simply by self-teaching. Depending on what your educational background and work experience is I'd probably recommend the same thing. Especially if you have strong math/stats background and previous work or education to support that.

I probably spent less than $50 on all the courses I took. I actually strongly recommend Udemy for a lot of this stuff. Things might have changed, but very often they had courses for like $9.99. Pay for 2-3 of those and read books like ESL: https://hastie.su.domains/ElemStatLearn/printings/ESLII_print10.pdf

and it'll get you 60-70% of the way there. The rest is taking what you learn and applying it.

I wrote a blog for a bit a few years ago. Here's a link to a lot of the resources I used: https://nkoenig06.github.io/about-me.html

I can't vouch for the prices being really low anymore, but I integrated coupons from the course authors that worked at the time. The Python DS one appears to be $13.99 now, it was $8.99 when I paid for it, so there is some inflation :)

Happy to try to answer any questions you have.

By doing this combined with my work experience and education I've gotten and turned down the following offers in the past 2 years:

Director of Data Science in the tech arm of a fortune 100 food processing company.
Senior Quantitative Researcher at a FAANG company.

This is all coming from a social sciences background, but I did focus on quantitative measurement and statistics within that background.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
