Dashcam recommendations
« on: March 31, 2019, 01:31:51 PM »
I've read stories on legal advice forums about people who were in car accidents where the other driver lied about what happened, and they were saved by having a dashcam for proof. I think it's a good idea to get one for my car, but there are a million different brands on Amazon. What kind do you use or recommend?

For these kinds of popular consumer electronics questions, I tend to go by the wirecutter reviews unless I have something very specific in mind. In this case: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-dash-cam/

They say the Garmin dash cam 55.

There's a separate MMM forum question that you didn't ask: is it worth it? I suspect not, but it probably depends a lot on where you drive.

I don't have one so I cannot make any recommendations. I think a dash cam is one of those things that might seem like a waste when it hasn't provided any benefit in years but only takes one time to make it totally worth it. If you have a smart phone I know there are several dash cam apps you could download. An old one you no longer use could be good for this.

I've looked into different dash cams brands but having a hard time finding one at the moment. There are so many brands. Does anyone have a good experience with any of them? I found this one https://dashcamcar.com/blackvue-dr750s-2ch/ particularly interesting.

I recently purchased a dashcam as a "just-in-case" level of protection for myself.  There are so many options, and I found myself getting overwhelmed with analysis paralysis until I really drilled down to the absolute dealbreakers for me.  I figured that for my use case, almost any dashcam would work in terms of video quality and such factors.  However, I live in a very hot climate, so that limited many options for me (battery vs. capacitor, suction cup mounts vs. mounting hardware, etc.)  I also wanted something I could tap into the power of my rearview mirror, rather than messing around with cords or fuses (I am not handy, so that was another factor.)  I also wanted it to be pretty unobtrusive, so a small form factor was important.

I ended up getting an older model BlackVue (I think a 650) for a couple hundred bucks.  It is a dual-channel version, meaning it has a front and rear camera, but I am only using the front camera now. (You can't add a rear camera to a single-channel dash cam later on, so I went with the dual channel for future-proofing.  I think a rear camera is a good idea, I just don't really want to bother with installing that right now.)  Then, I bought a mounting bracket so I wouldn't need to use a suction cup or double-stick tape, and a wire tap kit to power the dashcam from my mirror.  All told, it probably cost close to $350 for the setup, which isn't cheap.  But it looks nice, works well enough, was relatively easy to install (it's just awkward trying to work in the area around the rear-view), I don't have cords running everywhere, and I do have a bit more peace of mind when I am out there driving with idiots.

I hope this is helpful.

We bought this one from Amazon, $44.99 APEMAN Dash Cam 1080P FHD DVR Car Driving Recorder. Very happy with the purchase. Pretty simple but exactly what we needed. We live in South Florida, gets very very hot, but no problems so far.
