Cutting the Cable
« on: May 18, 2015, 06:02:29 AM »
We have slowly been dismantling our cable service piece by piece.  First, we switched out of our phone/internet/TV bundle to using Magic Jack for our business phone. And now...we are considering cutting cable TV and going the Netflix and Amazon Prime route (we have Amazon prime for the business anyway).  Here is my question for my fellow Mustachians... What plan do we need for Internet Only that will work for watching Netflix and Prime?  Here are my options through our cable provider....

$53.95  Download 10/Upload 2/ 300GB per month
$63.95 Download 30/Upload 3/500GB per month
$75.95 Download 50/upload 5/700GB per month
$116.95 Wideband 125 download/Upload 10/1 TB per month

My husband's biz is video production and he has to upload 30 second TV spots to the stations several times per week.  It doesn't have to be lightening fast as he can do it overnite.  Generally we only watch TV at nite after chores.

Your wisdom is most appreciated.  I have been resistant to killing the TV because of local stuff, but I'm warming up to the idea.

One datapoint here:  We have both Netflix and Prime, and we've been just fine on a 3Mbps connection, both via DSL and via Cable.  I *will* say that if I'm playing a game online while DW is watching something on Netflix, I run into latency problems, but other than that, 3Mbps has been plenty.

I can echo I.P. Daley's super guide advice here.  At 5mbps, my SO and I have no issues with 2 simultaneous netflix streams at DVD quality.    Cable company laughed when I said 5mbps will be enough, so nowadays I just tell them all I do is check email, even though I have no streaming issues.
