Title: Cutting caffeine to combat fatigue? How long?
Post by: Scotland2016 on December 27, 2018, 02:25:28 PM
I was reading a thread from November about ways to combat fatigue and someone mentioned cutting caffeine. This person said it took about 2-3 months to really notice a difference. Has anyone else had this experience? I'm thinking about cutting it out, but I'm not sure I can handle 2-3 months of normal fatigue combined with the lack of pick-me-up from the caffeine before things get better.

I cut out caffeine a couple of times a year, just to reset the system. I've never done a few months off, but I always find that caffeine only works as a pick-me-up if you're drinking more than usual.  which means I always ramp up consumption when I'm under any strain. So occasionally I have to quit (leading to a terrible couple of days) to reset the consumption. I've considered quitting forever, but I genuinely love coffee, and decaf just isn't the same.

I felt better after a week and noticed I was waking up less frequently during the night

I can't imagine it would take that long to make a difference.

Who told you 2-3 months?  That's crazy talk.

The first 3-5 days were always the worst.  You should be fine within two weeks.

I stopped drinking coffee since Thanksgiving. I substitute it for white or herbal tea. It was hard for a few days, but I'm used to it now.

Maybe you need to explain more about your fatigue? How is this manifesting itself? What do you think is the relationship with caffeine?

Something I learned recently is that caffeine stays in your system for 12 hours. People who drink it later in the day often have trouble sleeping and get less sleep. Then, because they’re tired, they use caffeine to stay awake and it becomes a vicious cycle. So, if you don’t use caffeine, you don’t need caffeine—does that make sense?

I’d cut it out completely for a month, give yourself a 30 day challenge and monitor your sleeping and how you feel.  There are lots of apps for that. Yes, the first couple day suck and you’ll probably get headaches, but then you won’t notice it. It’s only 30 days, what do you have to lose except possibly the thing that is concerning you?
