Best Vanguard funds for non-IRA investment money
« on: April 27, 2015, 10:02:06 AM »
Hello,
I have a few thousand dollars that I want to put into Vanguard for safe keeping for at least a decade.
Do any of you have funds that you like?
TIA

Many people recommend the Vanguard Total Market funds.  I have my retirement account, and my son's college account invested in these (although my son's is invested in the 'Fidelity' versions of the same funds):
90%
VTI - Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (no minimum investment)
VTSMX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Investor Shares ($3K min.)
VTSAX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Admiral Shares (lowest cost, $10K)
10%
BND - Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (no minimum investment)
VBMFX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Investor Shares ($3K min)
VBTLX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Admiral Shares (lowest cost, $10K min)

I use that Bogleheads wiki page for guidance. This has led me to keep all of my foreign stock allocation and part of my domestic stock allocation in taxable accounts. Bonds and REITs go in the tax shelters, plus the rest of my domestic stock. The specific funds we have in our taxable account are VTMGX and VTSAX.
