Need info for Canada - cheap plans etc pls
« on: March 18, 2017, 01:14:58 PM »

Hi

So thrilled to have found this site! I am new to this site and live in expensive Vancouver BC! I am looking for Canadian sites that offer same counsel but with info on affordable Canadian credit cards, cell plans, insurance plans etc. Any ideas? How is Questrade going for you? I am at TD but want to start with loer cost investing options but know so little about investing.....so am dependent on bands. I am 53 and have already lost so much maoney in redoing our mortgage several times. Unfortunately learning late in life and trying to catch up.

Welcome!  I'm in the Okanagan, BC, which isn't quite Vancouver-level-crazy expensive, but getting closer every day, haha.  A lot of people here use Canadian couch potato for investing advice.  Not sure about other sites for Canadian credit cards, cell plans etc, but there are a few posts in the forums here about it.  This is a great place to start catching up, I hope you find the MMM blog and the forums as useful and inspiring as I have

If you're already with TD, Canadian Couch Potato has an option using TD's e-Series index funds.

And yes, there are several threads on this forum for Canadians specifically.

Not as active a community as this one, but sometimes solid advice.

Questrade is fine. If you're already set with TD and don't have a stack of money, eSeries is fine (probably worth switching in an RRSP so you avoid foreign tax, but again not til you have a reasonable sum of cash).

Credit cards... you need to say what your spending pattern is. There are some awesome sign up bonuses, but ongoing you probably either want a free card (PCF one if you shop at Loblaw-owned places), if you spend enough generally the MBNA RWE is good (flat 2% everywhere), or if mostly at gas/grocery etc, either of Scotia's Gold Amex or Momentum Visa Infinite (4% in those categories) - for the last three you have to offset the yearly fee, but you get travel insurance and so on.

Phones... well, again, you need to specify your usage. If you just need to have a phone, Speakout/7-11 is the cheapest. If you can do VOIP services, Fido is doing 3Gb/$15 which is awesome (direct calling though, it's $1/min... use Skype or Fongo or whatever).

*Edit* - oh, and the obligatory "if you need signup referrals, I'm your anonymous internet person". Don't apply for anything without checking whether a referral will get you a better offer - in terms of credit cards.

Cell Phone are very regional in Canada and we still need to hunt for cheap plans, good luck.

Credit Cards, I use two and one is already mentioned. The Scotia Visa Infinite with the 4% cashback is a great card. I also choose to use my CanTire MasterCard as the CT Money it generates is a nice free way to buy household products etc..

I always recommend Scotia iTrade and following the Canadian Couch Potato ETF portfolio suggestion
