Creative Mustachian Alternative to my Beloved Jeep?
« on: December 08, 2015, 11:55:33 AM »
Although I love my big bad Jeep Wrangler I do not love it’s gas guzzling ways and significant monthly payments. I am trying to figure out a way to downsize our vehicle but still be able to do the things we need and like to do.

Current situation:

-1 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4 door)
-2 toddlers
-1 med- large senior dog
-Live in area of Canada that gets a lot of snow and floods a couple times a year- if you are low to the ground and lack winter tires you will get stuck
-Summers spent driving to cottage and camping areas on not the best of roads (ie mini coopers do not fare well here)
-4 wheel drive is not absolutely necessary but I do use it because we have it

What I want:

-Affordable price
-Fuel efficient
-Highly reliable vehicle that can be driven for years into the ground
-Safe

My idea:

-Small hatchback with good reliability rating (I realize dog will likely not fit with 2 adults and kids in car so plan may need to wait until she moves on to dog heaven)
-Add a roof rack to cart around extra stuff and sporting gear when needed
-Good set of winter tires
-Lift kit to bring off the ground so we can still adventure off the main roads

What do you guys think? Any suggestions on vehicles? Is the lift kit a silly idea on a small car? Thanks.

You will notice that there is no response here since jeeps rock and there is really no substitution for a new jeep other than a used jeep.

You can find a cheaper vehicle (many)
You can find a more fuel efficient vehicle (many)
You will have a hard time finding a vehicle that retains value more

We have 2 jeeps and are pretty happy

Get an old CR-V and lift it with off-road tires. Like a jeep, but less power, less value retention, and more fuel efficiency.

I have a Subaru Outback. They hold value like nobodies business are great in the winter(I live in Minnesota). They also have a ton of extra room. The dog can ride in the back end. Put a doggie bed or some blankets and he will be happy!
