Inexpensive surveillance

I have a corner property. On one ROW I planted three trees recently.

Today, some hood rat, at 6:43 pm snapped one of my new trees in half. My neighbor does commercial low voltage, some of which includes security cameras. So he has cameras on the front of his house. One of the cameras gets close to half of my planting strip on the side of the house.

So I "know" who snapped my tree. But unfortunately, the video footage we have doesn't actually show him snapping it. But watching the video its pretty clear this future penitentiary freshman class of 2017 is the dirtbag.

Without spending a fortune, I know there's gotta be inexpensive cameras and the associated sundries out there to do this setup.

My concern is when I replace this tree, there exists the potential that it becomes a game for the kid whose dad has probably been in jail before he was even born, and he'll break the new tree just for fun.  And I want the little bastard on film.

What y'all surveillance experts think?

It sounds like you get on ok with your neighbor.  Can you do a deal with him where he changes the angle of one of his cameras to survey your yard for a while? Swap something along the lines of baking, babysitting, lawnmowing instead of spending cash on a camera yourself...

If the neighbor's camera won't reach, look into game camera (the sort that hunters use). They're motion-activated and relatively inexpensive. Usually they take still shots; would that work for you?

Look into Ubiquiti or TrendNET network cameras.

And forgive the poor sap... maybe show some mercy. You have an opportunity to potentially change a life.

Perhaps.

As of now, I have a name and know where the kid lives. My NCIS training (DVD collection that I've been borrowing) has been paying off apparently.

A group of three kids ratted his name and address out. Now I just need to get another confirmation of his name.
