Converting VHS to DVD

I'm looking at buying something to do this as a gift for Christmas.  Anyone have any experience or recommendations here?

Only from a decade ago, but I'm guessing that you can find a very cheap solution that is super slow, or a very expensive solution that is fast.

Back then you just get a video capture card for your computer and plug it into your VCR out.  Then play the tape and the capture software will record (usually to a DVD format).  You need a DVD burner too.

$200 is pretty steep. How many cassettes do you have? If it's only a few, there are services that convert it for you for $10-20 each.

If you already have a VHS player, use a little box to convert rca to USB, then burn DVD.  For example:

I assume you have a VHS player?

get a composite video capture card... even a USB one will do... cheap on ebay.

Connect up everything, play the VHS and capture the video stream.  Then convert it to with some free software like Handbrake or AVC Free.  I've done this for customers in the past... it's really easy but a bit time consuming.
