Glue that works in heat and moisture
« on: July 29, 2019, 06:42:30 PM »
So I broke something off in the dishwasher that should not have been detached.  Now, the good news is this part doesn't impact the DW from working.  Nevertheless, I would like to put it back in place instead of it falling off every time.  Is there glue or tape or something that would work in the heated and wet environment of a dishwasher?

You want a 2 component adhesive. Gorilla glue might work- I believe it is a moisture cure

Is it plastic or metal?

If plastic, I've had good luck with the 2K plastic adhesive sold at HD/Lowe's.

It's plastic. Thank you for the tip.

No matter what you use, clean the surfaces really well (wipe with isopropyl alcohol or acetone or something. Then let the glue cure 24 hours in a dry environment before starting the dishwasher again.

It'll probably fail because hot + wet + dishwasher soap is a really harsh environment, but you might get 6 months out of it, which might be worth it.

Not what you asked, but check to see what the replacement part would be.  I've found that many such pieces can be replaced for less than the cost of a tube of quality 2-part epoxy (i.e. $5 or so), and replacement is much less likely to fail than repaired in this case.

you can find part schematics for anything built in the last 20+ years by googling the model number (usually located inside the door).

Unfortunately the part I broke off is the door vent.  It looks to be a one piece with the door so buying the vent separately doesn't look viable.

Gorilla Glue - not sure if there was a separate choice for exterior glue - we have plenty of moisture, humidity, heat and the occasional flooding, held up well to all the elements for the past ten years.
I glued metal and plastic to stone.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
