Title: Considering moving to the US
Post by: MexicanMustache on December 06, 2014, 04:22:39 PM
Fellow mustachians, I'm considering taking a job position in the US is there anyone from Portland, Or.

I'm interested in some advise into regular living expenses, and good ways to be a mustachian with about 80k yr salary.

Thanks.

Portland is a great place to go mustachian. There is good public transport (bus, streetcar, light rail, and even an aerial tram).  You wouldn't need a car.  There are lots of things to see outside the urban area, and there are car sharing options or just rent once in a while. There is a saying about Portland - that it is where young people go to retire. I figure that must mean they live frugally, so you have that going for you.  The housing market can be a bit tight, but if you look around, I'm sure you can find some options.  $80k will go far Portland, really far it you're single, and even if you're a couple or family and mustachian.  Look to live in SE, inner NE, or North Portland for the most walkable and bikeable areas.  Avoid 82nd and east, and as you go out on the west side (Tigard, Beaverton), you almost have to have a car. Hillsboro, too, but the Orenco Station area may be possible without.

Portland is a great city.  Definitely an opportunity to pursue.

I have friends who moved to PDX and they are living in SW, about 15 min from downtown, They say is Great they are walking distance from the bus line, and the usually use the Public transportation.

I'm thinking on renting for about a year, as i am mexican i need to start building a credit history before i can purchase a home.

I do have another question, is $875/month too much for rent for a 792 sq.ft.?

Portland isn't cheap...so I'd say that's reasonable. There's plenty of studios that's more than that.
