Best cities to work remote, pursue FIRE
« on: September 04, 2019, 11:29:40 AM »
Hey guys,

I had a new opportunity come across that could potentially have me move from the East Coast out to the Phoenix/Tempe AZ area. I found out yesterday that while the company has a hub there, if I accept this role, I could ideally work location independent (as long as I am in a city with an international airport and open to traveling to sites 20 percent of the time)

I am perfectly fine with 4 days of travel one time a month, and this new wrinkle in this opportunity has me excited. The compensation wont ideally change no matter if I pick SF vs. Dallas vs. Anywhere else.

I am seeking a city on the coast (dont want to be landlocked) with decent population of single women (I'm single) and activities (sports teams) . If I were to look at land lock cities it would be in states with no income tax (Nashville, Vegas, Any city in TX or FL)

What city/cities would make the most sense for me?

New York metro and Cali aren't on my radar.

That's a pretty personal choice, so I don't think my opinion would be helpful.

But here's a map of professional sports teams:
http://www.stadium-maps.com/sports-maps/major-league-sports-map.html

(If college sports meet your needs, than pretty much every big city would be okay.)

And here's a map of "major" airports (I don't know what the criteria is):
https://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/map/google_map_major_US_and_Canadian_Airports.htm

The only cities that clearly meet the criteria you laid out and weren't on your original list are New Orleans, Portland, Seattle, Boston, Washington DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Maybe Raleigh Durham if that's close enough to the ocean to you.

I'm guessing you can rule out a lot of those right away (if you don't want to live in NY, I bet you don't want to live in Boston either).

Thanks for the reply. My reasoning for ruling out NY metro was purely cost of living related. That is also why I couldnt consider Orange County, CA.

Florida has some great options. If you are trying to avoid HCOL (Miami), look into Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, and Jacksonville. All have international airports (some larger than others) and are on the coast.

Thanks, I was considering Tampa and Orlando, hopeful that the RE market in both still has some affordable options

The Denver area is pretty pricey these days, but some of its suburbs aren't too bad, or since you're single you might be able to find a decently cheap roommate situation.

We have the Avalanche (hockey), Broncos (football), Rockies (baseball), Mammoth (indoor lacrosse), Outlaws (outdoor lacrosse), Rapids (soccer), Nuggets (basketball) and some other minor-league types. A new lightrail line goes from downtown to Denver International Airport, so you might even be able to go carless, if you really want. The mountains are great, but a lot of people are here because of the mountains (ski traffic in winter is notorious).

Cost of rent/housing is the only hiccup, though, you really have to get a little lucky to find a cheap living situation, but that's from my frame of reference, so YMMV. Nothing else is particularly expensive.

Oops, just reread this. Oh, well, I'd still argue Denver is otherwise a good choice. I don't know what the m/f ratio is, but you will find lots of active women here :)

State income tax is booked at 4.63%, really not too bad. There was an initiative to create tiers, but nobody was having any of that crap.

Never considered Denver and honestly have only been there one time for one day.

Someone I know also works remotely and chose Boulder, CO - at least for the next year.

I’m in the Vegas area which has gotten more expensive in the last few years for housing but is pretty reasonable in other areas (taxes being the one you point out, we also benefit in produce prices being close to Cali and Mexico- I am always sticker shocked when we return to the Midwest to visit family).  Lots of single ladies here for sure, and lots to do that isn’t the strip.  We are getting the Raiders (though tickets are asinine expensive), have the Golden Knights, a minor league baseball team, and UNLV has good basketball.

One thing I like about it that I would consider is the actual airport traffic in terms of accessibility to non stop flights.  I would want to know what areas I’d be traveling to most often and ensure wherever I choose has good flight options.  Also if an airport is delayed considerably more than average- for example San Francisco isn’t on your list but routinely has to close a runway for fog which backs them up all the flipping time, when I had to travel to the Bay Area for work I always flew into Oakland because of that.

I wouldn't buy property in Florida. Don't be the one left holding the bag when climate change starts getting priced into the real estate values.

Interesting map, thanks for sharing.

Re: Airports - I have heard nothing but good things from locals who fly regularly out of Las Vegas. I would primarily be visiting sites on the East Coast, so direct flight options are a must.

Interesting perspective.  I live in Tampa, and we're moving (to Nova Scotia) in the next year or so.  Ironically, I'm also hoping to be working remotely.

Tampa is fine, but culturally it isn't what we're looking for.  And we also feel like it's future isn't particularly bright (partly because of the aforementioned climate change).  That said, housing is still pretty affordable and the airport is very convenient.  I'd be happy to answer any specific questions.

Are there certain cities on the east coast you'd be visiting regularly? It might be nice to not always have to fly.

If you'll be traveling a lot for work, I'd be looking for places with airports that offer direct flights to the place you'll most frequently be traveling to.  Airports with lounge access (i.e. if you have the Sapphire Reserve card) would be convenient, too.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
