Cheap beach camping in Florida over the holidays
« on: November 30, 2016, 10:19:38 AM »
Hey all,

My husband found out he has the week of Christmas off. We're looking to do some camping here in Florida. Beach camping would be great, and primitive camping is okay too. I noticed Gulf Islands National Seashore has some primitive camping. Anyone here have experience with that? Or do you recommend somewhere else? I'm interested in hearing about possible locations and your past experiences.

Your location says Central US, so if you're not already in Florida I'd suggest someplace like Matagorda Bay in Texas, where the beaches are all public. I know people who have really enjoyed that.

Cayo Costa State Park, an island off the Gulf Coast, accesible only by boat (there is a ferry service), is about 1 hr south of St Pete and is SPECTACULAR!

Thanks everyone.

We DO live in Florida now. We moved a couple months ago. I should update my location, I know.

The issue is that state parks are full, and have been for quite some time. At this point, we'd be looking at getting into some of them late next year. So, that's out. However, I know a lot of other government agencies also have campgrounds or allow beach camping, so I'm trying to figure out something along those lines. We'll see! :)

I spent some time camping on Gulf Islands National Seashore awhile back (probably more than 10 years ago now, sadly), and it was a wonderful experience. Beautiful beaches in that area, without the rampant condo development of other places in Florida. Thanks for reminding me!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
