Change credit card Sign Up Bonus - success anyone?

Hi, I’m pretty new to credit card hacking. Got approved for a Southwest Chase card last week that offered a 40,000 point sign up bonus for a $1000 spend in the first 3 months. Today on Doctor Of Credit I see they are now offering a 75,000 point bonus for a $5k spend in the first 3 months. That’s a heftier spend for me but I can make it work (we’ll be traveling.) I called Chase who said I should first spend the $5k and then call back to request the richer premium, and then they’ll refer my request to Southwest for approval. Anyone else have success doing this? Is there a better process? I’d prefer to know I can get the extra points if I’m going to direct all the spending to this card.

I don't have any personal experience asking Chase to match a new sign up bonus. In this situation I would recommend checking the churning subreddit (it has its own search engine at https://churning.io/) or Flyertalk for advice if you haven't already!

I have done it in the past with Chase (maybe 2 years ago), but I just tried with my Sapphire Preferred card about a month ago and they wouldn't match the new offer.

I've successfully done it on Chase cards the same way they are telling you (e.g., complete the spend for the high bonus and call back).   However, that was several years back.

Thanks all. I went down the rabbit hole on those links. Didn’t really find the answer to my question but I’m in awe of the many details and considerable effort folks make to generate points.
