Cell phone advice for travel
« on: April 27, 2015, 12:29:58 AM »
My job requires that I drive to rural areas. I have an AT&T cell plan. I am out of contract and considering switching to a less expensive phone service. However, I absolutely need good coverage when I am traveling. Mostly for GPS. I use GPS multiple times per day. Does anybody else do this type of thing? I could switch to a stand-alone GPS. Do companies like Garmin have good coverage? Does anybody have experience with this type of thing?

Absolutely look for a cheaper service. As for maps, if you don't need traffic information, which obviously need data for up-to-date information, you can save maps in your phone for when you turn off data or don't have coverage. Google Maps can be saved, but no directions. Try Co-Pilot and OsmAnd for directions.

Everything you're after is already covered in the guide (unabridged here), including links to mobile data management and the GPS topic.
