Vehicle Conundrum - Returning to USA
« on: September 14, 2016, 02:06:03 AM »
Hello,
As a deployed service member, I am looking into buying a vehicle from Military Auto Source which buys directly from the vehicle manufacturer. They are offering me a new 2016 Ford Fiesta (Perfect car for what I want) for $15,500 OTD. I have cash on hand seperate from my investments to afford the vehicle without taking a loan, and they will deliver it to me at my duty station. I will be living on base about 5 miles from where I work and will be biking to work everyday. My main use of the vehicle will be traveling to Obstacle Course Races along the east coast so I can stop buying plane tickets/rental vehicles/etc. Am I wrong for wanting to buy this car? I would plan on keeping it for at least 150k miles, 10+ years.

Details:
-I have no debt
-About $12k in Vanguard, $10.5k in SDP which will go to Vanguard after deployment, maxing my ROTH TSP
-My bike will not be delivered to me until about 2-3 weeks after I arrive to my next duty station so I will need a vehicle right away
-Vehicle Insurance would be about $60 a month
-Browsing craigslist and dealerships online did not show many alternatives that MMM has suggested in the past (Older vehicle in 10k range)

Thanks for any advice you have.

Yeah the stick shift would knock another $900 off the price so I will probably go for that. Thanks for the info.
