Favorite not personal-finance blogs
« on: June 27, 2014, 09:23:15 AM »
Besides MMM and other personal finance blogs, what are your favorite blogs to read - particularly blogs that challenge the status quo about life and/or self-improvement blogs? I'm thinking of blogs like Zen Habits, Raptitude, JD Roth's More than Money, and Riskology.

Welll, many here may not be interested, but my other favorite blog is http://www.thenester.com/

It's a home decor blog.   But she focuses on using what you have, making things, getting thrifted things and putting together a home that really fits your personality and life that's lived in and that ever changes.   I just love her style (white with some pops of color, simple but homey, and a little whimsical)  and have found it very easy to implement similar very inexpensively.

Eg, my current project is making one of these stump side tables out of a stump we had in our wood pile: http://www.thenester.com/2014/06/a-painted-stump-table-with-tacks.html .   I may or may not paint it and/or use tacks just like hers.   But, the basic idea was inspiring.

I enjoy http://www.itstactical.com/ and http://www.thesurvivalpodcast.com/

It can be hit or miss if it's actually a good article/podcast.  If you are interested outdoor survival and off the grid living they are good for that.  But they both can be a little crazy at times.

Some of these won't be for everyone, but...

http://librarianshipwreck.wordpress.com/: This blog is written by a librarian and casts a wary eye on technology. The main author is sort of a Reform Luddite. Interesting takes on current tech trends.

http://www.veggiebelly.com/: Great vegetarian food blog.

http://www.becomingminimalist.com/: MMM peeps will easily embrace minimalism. Why not further your knowledge?

http://www.philosophersmail.com/: Takes culture and popular topics and puts an existential spin on them.

Fluent in 3 months - http://www.fluentin3months.com/blog/

It is about language learning and I think the MMM crowd will embrace the fact the author lives a pretty minimalist life. He doesn't truly have a home (he uses his parents house as a home address for legal purposes) and travels the world on the cheap. Definitely worth a look for anyone looking to pick up a new language!

http://captainawkward.com - letters column/personal advice blog, esp. for dealing with people who have poor senses of boundaries, are emotionally manipulative, etc.

http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/ - pretty specific blog by linguistics professors about, well, topics in linguistics

http://streetsblog.net - US national coalition of blogs on walking/biking/transit/urbanism/urban design etc. Actually an interview there with MMM was how I found it.

bikeportland.org - similar to above, but specific to my city. Part of the blog network.

http://www.hackingchinese.com/blog/ - language learning blog, spec for Mandarin, but has lots of advice that applies to learning any language or skill really

There are others I look at occasionally, but that's probably the most frequent (not including news websites).

I think if read the right way, this blog is pretty consistent with MMM lifestyle.  This couple hosting the blog advocates DIY home decorating and renovation.  They use Craigslist and bargains where possible, but they do purchase certain things from brand name stores when it's really what they have their heart set on.  I find it inspiring!

The alzheimer spouse website. alzheimersspouse.com Issues are really different for a spouse as opposed to an adult son or daughter, or if it's your grandparent. I hope none of you need it, but if God forbid you do, it is a lifesaver.

www.thealzheimerspouse.com    This should link you. It is run by Joan Gershon, and the message boards are particularly useful.

http://lesswrong.com - 'a community blog devoted to refining the art of human rationality' -  gets a bit nerdy but some really in-depth empirical looks at cognitive biases and the ways they can keep you less happy than you might be
http://marginalrevolution.com - 'small steps toward a much better world' - GMU economists Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, mostly economics but lots of other random stuff
http://jesuschristsiliconvalley.tumblr.com - if you're in the tech/startup world, you might enjoy this, acerbic satire of some of it silliness

http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com  It's a diy/homemaker type blog with some great recipe ideas for making your own cleaners and such. I use her laundry soap recipe(the sample size batch)

I like AffordAnything.com  Her motto is "Master Your Money. Ditch the Cubicle. Embark on an Epic Adventure." She managed to travel to 30 countries before she was 30.

She has an emphasis on passive income (rental real estate in her case), spending only on things you love, and designing a life that's all yours.

I am slightly obsessed with Humans of New York.  I follow via FB, but there's a site too:
http://www.humansofnewyork.com/

It's not self-improvement, but his photos and captions definitely expand one's view of life and our fellow humans.

Despite never being interested in fashion stuff, I really like http://www.thesartorialist.com/.
While there's a chance it might make you want to go out and buy stuff, I think a lot of the photos highlight how people make their own personal style and that it's less about the clothes and more about how you wear them.  Occasionally it makes me be slightly less of a t-shirt and jeans slob.
