How much do early orthodontics (age 7-10) cost?
« on: October 29, 2016, 06:58:17 PM »
Our (extremely non-interventionist) dentist warned us we'd be talking early orthodontics for DS (age 9) in the spring.

We are electing our dental benefits now, and trying to decide.

Plan A: 450 a year, 200$ deductible, pays 80% up to a 1200$ max benefit.  Orthodontics and regular dental work would count towards the 200$ deductible. We've probably averaged less than one annual dental event per year.

Plan B: 150 a year, 200$ deductible, 500$ max benefit, no orthodontics coverage.

We are torn because we aren't expecting and cavities/crowns/etc. DS could get a consult and either they don't do early orthodontics or we decide to wait.

So far we've been on plan B and never exhausted the 500$ max.

I don't recall the cost, but we were on a monthly payment plan. There was an initial desposit. At the initial consult the orthodontist gave us a complete break down of all the costs.

My son had a severe underbite (bottom teeth came completely over top teeth all the way to gum line). The braces made a huge difference in his jaw development and the work done at age 7-9 could not have been done at an older age. He is 13 now and on round two. He has also had to have 18 or so teeth extracted, mostly baby teeth, due to an extremely small jaw and crowding that prevented the teeth coming out on their own.

I am paying 5500 per kid.  That is for one phase.  If the kid needs two phases, the cost goes closer to 10,000.  My orthodontist is on the more affordable side.  The other ortho I talked to wanted 8800 per kid.  Our insurance paid about 1500 toward it. Yippee.

Thanks.

H is leaning pro, I am against. But seeing these costs for just phase 1 is making me reconsider.

I didn't have early ortho; I was a late teen. The cost of mine was $6800 and my mother's insurance paid $3000.
