Children's medicaid
« on: October 05, 2016, 04:29:57 PM »
After spending some time looking into children's medicaid, I have not been able to get a definitive answer on how 401k CONTRIBUTIONS impact eligibility.  When they factor in wages do they use my pre-401k gross income or my post contribution pay.  The line on their paper form only says WAGES.  I called the state service group and they did not have the answer.

Thank you,
DO

Medicaid rules vary by state, so it's hard to say. But the right question to ask is "when you ask for income, is that gross income, or MAGI?" If gross income, 401k contributions wouldn't make a difference. If MAGI, I believe they would.

If you say what state you're in, I can poke around a bit more...

Etselec,

Thank you for the response.  This is a question for NH.  I have found online references that have implied both possible answers.  When contacting them by phone I got the feeling that MAGI was a unknown term to the person on the phone.

Thank you again,
DO

that's interesting, I guess I made the assumption that it is MAGI, same as ACA uses for subsidies, etc..

If it's MAGI, 401k contributions would reduce your overall income, I am pretty sure that includes medicaid as well.
