Title: Can you have too much in a rIRA?
Post by: YTProphet on June 22, 2015, 11:16:42 AM
So I'm fortunate enough to have a work 401k plan that allows me to do the mega backdoor Roth. I also happen to have enough cash on hand that I can live off while I send basically my entire paycheck to my rIRA/pre-tax 401k/post-tax 401k. Should I be at all leery of dumping $36,000 a year into a rIRA ($6k straight to it and $30k through the megabackdoor method) plus my $18k 401k?

As a side note, I'm only allowed to make an in-service distribution once per year and I'm only allowed to contribute 50% of every paycheck to my post-tax 401k. So, it'll take me about 9 months to fill up the post-tax 401k, at which point I'll be able to make the in-service distribution.

I have about $50k in taxable accounts and another $100k temporarily liquid. I'll need to live off the $100k if I decide to do the megabackdoor contributions for 3 years in a row, which is my current plan.

Since you have the cash to live on, it sounds like a great opportunity. Congrats! I wish I could put more in my tax-advantaged accounts.

In short, no.
Possible exceptions: your straight in limit is either $5500 or $6500 depending on age; if your MAGI allows, contributing to a tIRA will likely be better for you.

And a great plan it is - enjoy!
