Employers portion of SS?
« on: January 26, 2015, 11:00:31 AM »
Hi all, I believe the employee pays part of the SS and the employer pays the other part.

I never got a clear answer from my employer (I took a pt job back in Sept) as to whether they were paying the employer's part or I was?

I have a 401 k plan and am referred to both as an employee and a contractor.

So looking at my W2 from 2014.. How can I tell??

Thanks

Frank

Unless I'm mistaken, w2 means they paid the employer portion. When you're 1099'd is when you have to pay self employment tax (the equivalent of paying both employee/employer portions)

^^ Yep, what terran said.  W2 = employee so company pays employer portion.

Great thanks all,

I suspect the vagueness of the answers I was getting is because nobody had brought it up before..:)

I have a 401 k plan and am referred to both as an employee and a contractor.

Is that because you are an employee of an agency working as a contractor for some other company?  If so, it would make sense for the W-2 to have come from the agency.

Generally, individual companies go to great lengths to distinguish their employees from their contractors.  Google "co-employership" for details.

Exactly.. an employee of the agency that provides contracted engineering services to a blue chip company.. That I used to work for incidently.

Yes the W2 came from my employer.

Certainly co-employment has always been a very touchy issue and one I encountered a lot as a manager.
