Buying travel health insurance - which deductible to take??
« on: November 25, 2021, 12:40:24 PM »
Canadian Snowbird heading to the States for the winter...travel health insurance is 5 million.
$0 deductible = $1,021
$1,000 = $817 or
$2,500 =$766
I'm 55, healthy, can afford any option but don't want to feel ripped off. No pre-existing conditions,  not planning anything more extreme than pickleball. 4th winter travelling and always stumble over this question.
What would you do smart people?

Take the $2500 deductible.  If you don't make a claim you'll feel good you took the lowest-priced option.  If you do make a claim you'll probably have bigger things to worry about and the $2500 won't trouble you at all.

(That's my psychology-based approach... maybe a statistician or insurance underwriter will see this thread and chime in!)

I'm curious does your policy have any specific coverage limitations/conditions for COVID?

Thanks Okits, surely I'm not the only person who gets stumped by this choice.

Retire-Canada,  yes, there is a covid rider.

So you are fully covered [to the overall policy limit] for any COVID related costs or are they capped at a lower amount?

Up to 5 million.
I had this last year too but afterwards I thought since
I have a DNR order, I won't  go on a ventilator so probably don't need it...

If you have a very minor thing like a UTI or sinus infection that needs a quick trip to a 'minute clinic' type place, you would pay maybe $100-$150 and the prescription would be very inexpensive. So not worth it to pay more to cover that with a lower deductible. If you have something serious happen like a car accident or heart attack, and you need an ambulance and/or ER visit, you'll max out any of those deductibles.

Basically, if you're willing to bet a few hundred dollars that you're not going to end up in the ER, get the $2500 deductible.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
