Buying a Road Bike in the Ottawa Region
« on: December 21, 2017, 09:05:44 AM »
I tried searching for ''buying a bike in the forum (using google) but was unable to find anything on it.

I'm about 5''6, and I'm looking for a pretty high speed road bike (Not competition level, but something that is light-weight and goes quick), I'm fine being passed by people in lycra, but they should be the only ones!

I'm in the Ottawa region, and this time of year, people are trying to get rid of bikes because they have no space/don't need them anymore.

I've been using this search to try and check the Ottawa market, and there seem to be reasonable ones between 100-500$

I'm not sure how to compare bikes, and decide which are worth the price: Examples:

Anybody have a guide or some recommendations?
(Newest post has current offerings)

Of the ones you posted, the LG would be the obvious winner.  The only one with relatively modern components, including integrated brake/shifter levers.

Agree, the LG is the clear winner here. a 48 frame is probably too small for you and the 70's bike... well...

Rebumping this with newer options, as the one that was previously recommended got sold before I could get to it.

This is the one I'm leaning towards: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-road-bike/ottawa/eclipse-ultra-light-road-bike/1324688297?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
Is it worth the price?

Other option : https://www.kijiji.ca/v-road-bike/ottawa/new-21-speed-road-bike/1324601392?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

The GMC is junk, avoid at all costs.

The other one is good but I would make sure the frame isn't too small for you.

Why is the GMC junk? Company doesn't make good quality bikes? Any extra info allows me to pre-select out other options as they appear/disappear from listings

https://www.walmart.com/ip/22-5-GMC-Denali-700cc-Men-s-Bike-White-Red/49590912

-One size fits all frame size
-Grip shifters? On a road bike? WTF?
-Brakes are cheap stamped aluminum
-Non branded components, other than the ultra low end Tourney RD.  I would be looking for 105 components at a minimum, as the other bike has
-I'm going to assume the frame is poorly built based on price alone
-It came from Walmart
-It is grossly overpriced

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
