Take a job that I might not stay at very long?
« on: June 07, 2016, 05:06:40 PM »
Has anyone taken a job that they knew they probably wouldn't stay at very long? I am currently at a job that I absolutely hate. I am about to get a job offer that is about 10% more and slightly closer to home. The catch is that it is a rotating shift where every 6 months my shift would change gradually working to an overnight shift(10pm-8am) four days a week. This shift would last for six months. It will be about 2 years before this happens but I already know that there is no way I could make this work for family and personal reasons.

They told me during my interview that everyone in my position is required to work this schedule however, the last two people they hired have been promoted within a year of starting so they never made it to that point.

Other than the shift work I think I would enjoy this job more than the position I'm in.

Any thoughts or past experience similar to this?

2 years is plenty of time to find yet another job if it turns out that you can't get out of the shift schedule. I say go for it. It doesn't sound like you have anything to lose. And nowadays working only a few years at a job is not seen as bad.

I would take it and look for another job when it comes close to getting those hours you do not want. The reason for leaving (when being interviewed) could be that circumstances changed and your just unable to work that shift. 2 years is pretty reasonable stay at a job. I took a job for just 6 months knowing I would quit after that time.. It was just the best option at the time and made the most sense financially.

2 years is a fine amount of time to be somewhere. I'd go for it and search again in 18 months.

2 years is plenty of time. 1 year is my preferred minimum, but my field has a lot of turnover, so it's pretty normal.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
