What do I need to know about buying a bed? Our current bed is 5 yrs old and we plan on keeping it a few years more but I want to start saving now for a replacement. We prefer to buy better quality for something that will last longer and I value quality sleep very highly! I also have some back issues so I need to make sure I have adequate support from a mattress.
What do I need to consider with my purchase and budget allocation? Where is money well spent or wasted with beds? Does spending more mean a better bed/sleep?
My understanding from several sources is that an average bed slept in nightly lasts about 8 yrs (even though warranties are longer). Can I extend the quality life of my current bed by adding a memory foam topper or similar, or is it better to put that $$$ towards a new bed when the time comes?
I rotate the mattress but it can't be flipped over.

We bought ours from Sears online. Did not try before we got it. We also bought our guest room mattress online and are really happy with both. Though I like the guest room one a bit more... The only local mattress stores are ones that are many thousands of dollars...
It was $600 for a king mattress and two twin box springs. When we replace (probably after 10 years) we won't need new box springs. The mattress was sale priced for about $400 but of course I also used a coupon code and ebates.

We got our current mattress from Sears. We already had a perfectly fine frame and it has wood slats all underneath the mattress so no box spring is needed.
We went to the store and tried them all out, picked a nice pillowtop queen mattress for about $800. Are there cheaper mattresses? Sure. But for the amount of time we spend on the thing I think it's money well spent.

We bought two mattresses from Sleepy's that cost around $1700 each. My wife hated them, and I ended up moving one to the guest bedroom and replacing it with a $600 memory foam mattress from Costco, which has ended up being way more comfortable.

We bought a T&N just over a month ago. It's quite comfortable.
... now I just have to look up where/how to get rid of my old mattress. ;^)
