Well, technically, I never moved out, actually.  During college I commuted back and forth instead of living on campus, which I couldn't afford anyway.  Paid for most everything by myself.  A couple months after graduating and trying to figure out what the next step was, my mother whom I was living with passed away.  So I was sort of thrust into the real world.  I chose to use what little inheritance there was plus a nice mortgage to buy my brothers out on the house.

I'm sort of astonished that anyone would say they "moved out" at 18 or what have you when they were actually dependent on their parents for financial support for the next 4 years. I don't think that counts. My parents provided minimal grudging support while I was an undergraduate, so although I didn't live with them except for brief isolated occurrences, I would never say that I had "moved out," largely because I felt that I had to toe their line in order to maintain the tuition assistance. I'm not sure I've experienced greater happiness in my life than when I received my first graduate student loan* and could tell my parents to fuck themselves. For real.

*They were small loans. I lived very frugally as a student. The degree was still a stupid idea, but it cost me probably as little as could be reasonably expected.
I went to school 500 miles from home and worked campus jobs during the semester, and had internships all three summers, with only my first internship being in my hometown. My parents helped out (significantly!) with tuition, but I paid my living expenses and some tuition, in addition to scholarship money. They also had no unreasonable demands for how I live my life. I was financially dependent, but I certainly felt pretty independent, and learned how to live on my own.

I moved out right after college.  I lived in dorms/an apartment when I was in college, but I came home over breaks, so that doesn't quite count.  I lived at my parents' house for about two months after college graduation, and then never moved back.

We also had lower expectations too though - I shared a house with 4 other students, ate a lot of rice and beans, didn't buy fast food or eat out, couldn't afford to buy a calculator until grad school (used my trusty circular slide rule), drove a used Pinto, etc.
That doesn't sound very different from my living conditions in college 5 years ago.

I ate out a bit more (the local restaurant district had a 'half-price' period after 10:30PM or so, presumably planning to make money on drinks I didn't buy? The student paper also printed buy-one-get-one coupons for Qdoba one week, so I stocked up on newspapers and then I could also get ~1000 tasty healthy-ish calories for $3). But I didn't have a car. Obviously electronics are cheaper now, too, but I didn't get a smartphone until 2010 or so either.

I was completely self-sufficient when I left for college, except that I came home for breaks and lived with my parents during them.  My parents are lovely people, but not great with money.

I count it  as moving out if you don't have a bedroom anymore, and you're not allowed to answer the phone, or the door anymore, because "it's not your house".

Some people go into debt to companies, some people go into debt with their families - you've still moved out of home.

23. I accidentally hit the 26-30 range on my Kindle. Maybe a moderator could fix it?

I got a job too far to commute daily without hating life (90 minutes 1 way from my dad's house) so I moved to a new city by myself and my fiance joined me within a couple months. Technically I lived on my own from 18-22 when I went away to college, but I spent all my breaks at home and moved back home for about 14 months to Save money and help take care of my terminal mom.

I'm getting married and live in a different state. I still answer the phone and door when I visit my parents =P That's probably dependent on the family.

I'm still allowed to answer the door and phone at my parents house, and I have been married living out of state for over 10 years.

Of course, I answer the phone and door at my Aunts' houses and my sister's house, and my in-laws house.

I don't have bedrooms at any of them...
(I gave both scenarios, because I moved out before I was financially independent. But the question wasn't about financially separating from parents- it was when you moved out. To me, moving out was leaving the house and taking all my stuff with me. When I visited I had to pack stuff to bring with me, so I was a guest in my parents home, even if they were paying for my apartment.  And my bedroom did get converted into an office, though my sister's bedroom turned into a guest room, so no longer having a bedroom wouldn't have qualified for her.)

+1

Well, my bedroom is half office and half guestroom so I guess I kind of still have a bedroom (and the bed is my DH's old bed from before we got together so it's technically even my bed? lol).

I would be so upset and offended if my parents told me I couldn't answer the door because it wasn't my house :( That seems so mean -- they're the type that says 'you're always welcome' ...

I moved out when I went to college, because college was in Southern California and home was Northern California. But as far as detaching from my parents financially fully, that didn't happen until I got my first real job down here. I was fortunate to have them support me through my college years and partially for the half-year I was doing temp-work before landing something full-time. Looking back on things, I really blew my "college career" by slacking off most of the time. My parents were pretty gracious about everything so I'm thankful for that.

Either 18, 19, or 22, depending how you define it.

I went to University at 18, but parents still helped out with finances.  19 was the first summer I didn't live with my parents (I was with my sister), but my mom was quite distraught over this (I'm the youngest, so I'll always be the baby), so I spent the next two summers at my parents house.  Yeah, my mom was a bit clingy, but living at home was cheap and I do like my family.

After graduation I never moved back in my parents.  In fact, I never moved back to their town.  Almost 10 years later and they're all (parents and siblings) asking when I'm moving "home".

21, but it was joint with my GF (still together) at the time.  She is same age as I am.

We were kinda 'foolishly' just wanting to get out on our own and do our own thing... like any young adult.  Our combine income was like 65k and we took on a 250k mortgage!  Yeah... rice potatoes and chicken thighs were the main dishes like 5x a week :)

I'm glad we did though, cause we were 'lucky' to get into the Toronto housing at that time as RE has kinda "nutty" over the past 10yrs in Toronto.
