Boutique fitness classes
« on: May 05, 2017, 08:26:35 PM »
I know they aren't very Mustachian but I was curious if any of you have signed up for boutique fitness classes (circuit training/hiit), and if you think it's worth the money.

There's a local place that just started up that I've been checking out as they offer a free week of classes. They offer a la carte packages where you can buy 'bundles' of classes for set amounts depending on how many classes, and then go in as many or as few times as you want for whatever period of time. Otherwise it's $25 per class or $200~ per month. I doubt I would sign up for the monthly plan but the bundle/a la carte classes seem interesting.

This is the first time I've ever been to one of these kinds of gyms/fitness places and I actually sort of like it.

Prior to this, I was on hiatus after our second was born, but before that I was doing Youtube workouts in my garage on and off. Though, it's much easier to be lazy and less motivated to do at-home workouts (at least for me). The classes at the boutique place are way more intense too. I think a lot of it is psychological where you have other people around you and the trainer coming around barking at you, so you tend to work harder. Even before all this, there was a group of people that would meet (but only once or twice a week) to work out at a local park down the street in the early mornings, and my wife and I would try to go but early mornings were rough. It didn't cost anything and those were more intense than my Youtube workouts but maybe a level less than the boutique workouts.

In any case, I was kind of thinking about buying a bundle of classes and supplementing with at-home workouts. Also, based on what we've done in class, there are some ideas I can take to do at home (probably would need to get a few more weights). Otherwise, it's back to the Youtube routine... or perhaps I should check out P90X or Insanity. I've personally found that it helps to have others motivating me *in person* though. I think a lot of it has to do with mental fortitude, and once you've built that up working out alone at an optimal level seems to become much more achievable.

Thoughts? I know some may feel that though these kinds of things are expensive, it's justified if it will benefit your long-term health so as to avoid potential future health conditions (which can be crazy expensive). I just realized, I should probably go onto Meetup and look for any local workout groups - that might be a good alternative and much cheaper. EDIT: just checked and there's NADA, which is surprising for my area. I guess everyone wants to jump on the circuit/personal training train. I know some guys from the early morning classes we were doing so I could reach out to see if they want to start up again but it's never a guaranteed thing and based on everyone's availability/scheduling.

If you go to the classes, enjoy them and can afford them, go to it.  It is an investment in your health.  If you don't go it's a waste.

Wow, yes, this is spot on!  IMO, KBecks has the winning answer.

I did Orange Theory Fitness for like half a year.  I really enjoyed the workouts, but they were expensive and I had a super busy work schedule at the time, which meant that I wasn't really getting my money's worth out of the membership.  The class schedule wasn't ideal for me, and the couple class times that would have worked best for me were also the most popular for the other members, so they often filled up (online) long ahead of time and then I'd get blocked out.  Anyhow, I cancelled after about 6 months.

This year, I've been doing Beachbody On Demand, a wide variety of workout videos streamed at home.  This has been working really well for me and gives me tremendous flexibility in what types of exercises I want to do and when I want to do them.  I do one workout (sometimes two) nearly every day, so the cost for a year of On Demand access has already been well worth it for me.
